Although constantly exposed to fouling communities in these habitats, many species are surprisingly free of invertebrate epibionts and microfouling algae such as diatoms. In our study, we investigated the anti-fouling (AF) activities of different crude extracts of tropical Indo-Pacific sea cucumber species against the fouling diatom Cylindrotheca closterium. Nine sea cucumber species from three genera (i.e., Holothuria, Bohadschia, Actinopyga) were selected and extracted to assess their AF activities. To verify whether the sea cucumber characteristic triterpene glycosides were responsible for the observed potent AF activities, we tested purified fractions enriched in saponins isolated from Bohadschia argus, representing one of the most active anti-fouling extracts. Saponins were quantified by vanillin-sulfuric acid colorimetric assays and identified by LC-MS and LC-MS/MS analyses. We were able to demonstrate that AF activities in sea cucumber extracts were species-specific, and growth inhibition as well as attachment of the diatom to surfaces is dependent on the saponin concentration (i.e., Actinopyga contained the highest quantities), as well as on the molecular composition and structure of the present saponins (i.e., Bivittoside D derivative was the most bioactive compound). In conclusion, the here performed AF assay represents a promising and fast method for selecting the most promising bioactive organism as well as for identifying novel compounds with potent AF activities for the discovery of potentially novel pharmacologically active natural products.The various benefits of urban green space are gaining increasing attention nowadays. Hence, the distribution of green space has become a scrutinized concern for spatial equity among local governments and the planning scholars. This study is the first quantitative evaluation of urban park accessibility using house-level data in urban China, from the perspective of social equity. We chose Nanjing as the empirical case and examined 2709 real estate units and 79 parks within the city. Accessibility is measured by the 10-min walking distance from homes to the adjacent urban parks. Using the Street Network Analysis model in ArcGIS and the statistical methods in SPSS, the result shows that 60.5% of the real estates in Nanjing are located within a 10-min walk to access urban parks. However, this accessibility is positively correlated with housing prices, and negatively correlated with the age of the buildings, holding all other factors constant. While affluent homeowners capture a high-quality green amenity, newly-built low-income communities, where most residents are classified as a vulnerable population, have the lowest percentage of accessible green space. This study reveals the existing spatial disparities of urban park accessibility among different socio-economic groups in Nanjing, China. Additionally, we found that urban redevelopment projects with greening and the large-scale affordable housing construction are pricing out the urban poor and rural immigrants from the inner city to the urban peripheral areas. This will reduce the accessibility to urban parks and other public service facilities among the lower income families, and exacerbate the inequality among the rich and the poor in terms of their quality of life. Main findings of this study can inform policy decisions regarding equitable park provision in the construction of the green city and the sustainable development in urban China and other developing countries.The effect of maternal multivitamin supplementation on breast milk vitamin B12 concentrations has not been examined in Tanzania, where the prevalence of maternal plasma B12 insufficiency is 25.6%. Multivitamins (containing 50 µg vitamin B12) or placebo were provided during pregnancy and in the postpartum period. Breast milk samples were collected at or around six weeks postpartum from 491 participants in a trial of multivitamins (NCT00197548). Linear and logistic regression models were used to examine the effect of supplements on vitamin B12 concentration in milk and its associations with other variables including potential confounders. Median vitamin B12 concentration in breast milk was 206 pmol/L and 70% of women had levels indicating inadequacy ( less then 310 pmol/L). Multivitamin supplements did not significantly reduce the odds of inadequate vitamin B12 in breast milk, suggesting suboptimal absorption. A single unit increase in maternal hemoglobin at six weeks was associated with 18% lower odds of inadequate vitamin B12 in breast milk. Participants with higher BMI at baseline had double the odds of having inadequate vitamin B12 than the reference group ( less then 22 kg/m2). Trials to determine the optimal dose, route, and duration of supplementation to improve maternal B12 status in Sub-Saharan Africa are of utmost importance.Human monocytes/macrophages play a central role in the immune response and defense of the host from influenza virus infection. Carnosol, but not rosmarinic acid, is also a potent agr expression inhibitor. Natural rosemary extracts containing carnosic acid and carnosol inhibit S. aureus agr expression, both in luciferase reporter strains and in wild type strains isolated from patients with atopic dermatitis. Conventional antifungals used to treat fungal infections are no longer as effective, leading to increased mortality. Compounding this issue, there are very few new antifungals currently in development. Plants from traditional medicine represent one possible research path to addressing the issue of MDR fungal pathogens. In this commentary piece, we discuss how medical ethnobotany-the study of how people use plants in medicine-can be used as a guide to identify plant species for the discovery and development of novel antifungal therapies.In this paper, a new formulation of biodegradable and bioresorbable chitosan-based hydrogel for controlled drug release was investigated. A chitosan-dendrimer-hydroxyapatite hydrogel, obtained by covalently grafting chitosan powder with an hyperbranched PAMAM dendrimer followed by in-situ precipitation of hydroxyapatite and gelification, was synthesized and characterized by FTIR, NMR, TGA, XRD and rheological studies. The hydrogels have been also doped with an anti-inflammatory drug (ketoprofen) in order to investigate their drug release properties. Chemical and chemical-physical characterizations confirmed the successful covalent functionalization of chitosan with PAMAM and the synthesis of nanostructured hydroxyapatite. The developed hydrogel made it possible to obtain an innovative system with tunable rheological and drug-releasing properties relative to the well-known formulation containing chitosan and hydroxyapatite powder. The developed hydrogel showed different rheological and drug-releasing properties of chitosan matrix mixed with hydroxyapatite as a function of dendrimer molecular weight; therefore, the chitosan-dendrimer-hydroxyapatite hydrogel can couple the well-known osteoconductive properties of hydroxyapatite with the drug-release behavior and good processability of chitosan-dendrimer hydrogels, opening new approaches in the field of tissue engineering based on biopolymeric scaffolds.
