New experience around the role associated with general endothelial growth factor in biliary pathophysiology.
Pollen's practically-indestructible shell structure has long inspired the biomimetic design of organic materials. However, there is limited understanding of how the mechanical, chemical, and adhesion properties of pollen are biologically controlled and whether strategies can be devised to manipulate pollen beyond natural performance limits. Here, we report a facile approach to transform pollen grains into soft microgel by remodeling pollen shells. Marked alterations to the pollen substructures led to environmental stimuli responsiveness, which reveal how the interplay of substructure-specific material properties dictates microgel swelling behavior. Our investigation of pollen grains from across the plant kingdom further showed that microgel formation occurs with tested pollen species from eudicot plants. Collectively, our experimental and computational results offer fundamental insights into how tuning pollen structure can cause dramatic alterations to material properties, and inspire future investigation into understanding how the material science of pollen might influence plant reproductive success.Genetic variation in the FAM13A (Family with Sequence Similarity 13 Member A) locus has been associated with several glycemic and metabolic traits in genome-wide association studies (GWAS). Here, we demonstrate that in humans, FAM13A alleles are associated with increased FAM13A expression in subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) and an insulin resistance-related phenotype (e.g. higher waist-to-hip ratio and fasting insulin levels, but lower body fat). In human adipocyte models, knockdown of FAM13A in preadipocytes accelerates adipocyte differentiation. In mice, Fam13a knockout (KO) have a lower visceral to subcutaneous fat (VAT/SAT) ratio after high-fat diet challenge, in comparison to their wild-type counterparts. Subcutaneous adipocytes in KO mice show a size distribution shift toward an increased number of smaller adipocytes, along with an improved adipogenic potential. Our results indicate that GWAS-associated variants within the FAM13A locus alter adipose FAM13A expression, which in turn, regulates adipocyte differentiation and contribute to changes in body fat distribution. The discovery of graphene and graphene-like two-dimensional materials has brought fresh vitality to the field of photocatalysis. Bandgap engineering has always been an effective way to make semiconductors more suitable for specific applications such as photocatalysis and optoelectronics. Achieving control over the bandgap helps to improve the light absorption capacity of the semiconductor materials, thereby improving the photocatalytic performance. This work reports two-dimensional -H/-OH terminal-substituted siligenes (gersiloxenes) with tunable bandgap. All gersiloxenes are direct-gap semiconductors and have wide range of light absorption and suitable band positions for light driven water reduction into H2, and CO2 reduction to CO under mild conditions. The gersiloxene with the best performance can provide a maximum CO production of 6.91 mmol g-1 h-1, and a high apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 5.95% at 420 nm. This work may open up new insights into the discovery, research and application of new two-dimensional materials in photocatalysis.Polymer crosslinking imbues chemical stability to thin films at the expense of lower molecular transportation rates. Here in this work we deployed molecular dynamics simulations to optimise the selection of crosslinking compounds that overcome this trade-off relationship. We validated these simulations using a series of experiments and exploited this finding to underpin the development of a pervaporation (PV) desalination thin-film composite membrane with water fluxes reaching 234.9 ± 8.1 kg m-2 h-1 and salt rejection of 99.7 ± 0.2 %, outperforming existing membranes for pervaporation and membrane distillation. Key to achieving this state-of-the-art desalination performance is the spray coating of 0.73 μm thick crosslinked dense, hydrophilic polymers on to electrospun nanofiber mats. The desalination performances of our polymer nanocomposites are harnessed here in this work to produce freshwater from brackish water, seawater and brine solutions, addressing the key environmental issue of freshwater scarcity. The C-N cross coupling reaction has always been a fundamental task in organic synthesis. selleck chemicals llc However, the direct use of N-H group of aryl amines to generate N-centered radicals which would couple with alkyl radicals to construct C-N bonds is still rare. Here we report a visible light-promoted C-N radical cross coupling for regioselective amination of remote C(sp3)-H bonds. Under visible light irradiation, the N-H groups of aryl amines are converted to N-centered radicals, and are then trapped by alkyl radicals, which are generated from Hofmann-Löffler-Freytag (HLF) type 1,5-hydrogen atom transfer (1,5-HAT). With the same strategy, the regioselective C(sp3)-C(sp3) cross coupling is also realized by using alkyl Hantzsch esters (or nitrile) as radical alkylation reagents. Notably, the α-C(sp3)-H of tertiary amines can be directly alkylated to form the C(sp3)-C(sp3) bonds via C(sp3)-H - C(sp3)-H cross coupling through the same photoredox pathway.Olfactory and metabolic dysfunctions are intertwined phenomena associated with obesity and neurodegenerative diseases; yet how mechanistically olfaction regulates metabolic homeostasis remains unclear. Specificity of olfactory perception integrates diverse environmental odors and olfactory neurons expressing different receptors. Here, we report that specific but not all olfactory neurons actively regulate fat metabolism without affecting eating behaviors in Caenorhabditis elegans, and identified specific odors that reduce fat mobilization via inhibiting these neurons. Optogenetic activation or inhibition of the responsible olfactory neural circuit promotes the loss or gain of fat storage, respectively. Furthermore, we discovered that FLP-1 neuropeptide released from this olfactory neural circuit signals through peripheral NPR-4/neuropeptide receptor, SGK-1/serum- and glucocorticoid-inducible kinase, and specific isoforms of DAF-16/FOXO transcription factor to regulate fat storage. Our work reveals molecular mechanisms underlying olfactory regulation of fat metabolism, and suggests the association between olfactory perception specificity of each individual and his/her susceptibility to the development of obesity.
