We performed a retrospective cohort study to evaluate patients who received a MRSA surveillance culture at admission to the SICU (n=6,915) and collected and assessed all patient cultures for MRSA positivity during their admission. The primary objective was to evaluate the transition from a MRSA negative surveillance on admission to MRSA positive on any subsequent culture during a patient's SICU stay. Percent of MRSA positive cultures by type following MRSA negative surveillance cultures was further analyzed.

6,303 patients received MRSA nasal surveillance cultures at admission with 21,597 clinical cultures and 7,269 MRSA surveillance cultures. Of the 6,163 patients with an initial negative, 53 patients (0.87%) transitioned to MRSA positive. Of the 139 patients with an initial positive, 30 (21.6%) had subsequent MRSA positive cultures. Individuals who had an initial MRSA surveillance positive status on admission predicted MRSA positivity rates for cultures in qualitative lower respiratory cultures (64.3% versus. 3.1%), superficial wound (60.0% versus 1.6%), deep wound (39.0% versus 0.8%), tissue culture (26.3% versus 0.6%), and body fluid (20.8% versus 0.7%) cultures when compared to MRSA negative patients on admission.

Clinicians and medical researchers increasingly turn to nonformal online platforms to promote research. Altmetric Attention Score (AAS) is a quantitative measurement of online influence of research in real time. The objective of this study is to determine if AAS correlates with traditional bibliometrics in the orthopaedic literature.

From the 15 orthopaedic journals with the highest impact factor, the 10 most cited articles from each journal were reviewed for 2014 -2017. For each article, AAS was collected using the Altmetric Bookmarklet application and citation count from SCOPUS. Journal impact factor was recorded using Journal Citation Reports. Statistical analysis included Pearson's and Spearman's correlation coefficients.

A total of 600 articles were analyzed. A significant positive correlation was found between citation count and AAS for 2014 (r=0.3188, p < 0.0001), and no correlation for 2015 (r=0.1504, P=0.0653), 2016 (r=0.0087, P=0.9157), and 2017 (r=0.0061, P=0.9408). There was no significant correlation between impact factor and AAS in 2014 (r=0.4312, P=0.1085), 2015 (r=0.3850, P=0.1565), 2016 (r=0.1460, P=0.6035) and 2017 (r=0.0451 P=0.8732).

The Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score is the most frequently used neurologic assessment in traumatic brain injury (TBI). The risk for neurosurgical intervention based on GCS is heavily modified by age. The objective is to create a recalibrated Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score that accounts for an interaction by age and determine the predictive performance of the recalibrated GCS (rGCS) compared to the standard GCS for predicting neurosurgical intervention.

This retrospective cohort study utilized the National Trauma Data Bank and included all patients admitted from 2010-2015 with TBI (ICD9 diagnosis code 850-854.19). Chemotherapeutic agents are the most gonadotoxic agents that lead to POF. Although some previous studies have presented that mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) transplantation could rescue the ovary function of POF animal models through the paracrine pathway, these mechanisms require further investigation. However, mechanisms of embryonic stem cell-derived MSCs (ES-MSCs) therapeutic effects on POF animal models have not been fully investigated yet. This study aimed to evaluate the migration and distribution of ES-MSCs in a model of chemotherapy-induced POF. Female mice received intraperitoneal injections of cyclophosphamide (Cy) to induce POF. Then, MSCs were labeled with green fluorescent protein (GFP) in vitro and injected intravenously into POF mice, and the distribution of MSCs was dynamically monitored at 1 week after transplantation. We harvested the lungs, liver, spleen, ovaries, heart, and kidneys 1 week after transplantation. The sections of these tissues were observed under the fluorescent microscope. More than 70% MSCs were successfully labeled with GFP at 72 h after labeling. MSCs were uniformly distributed in multiple organs and tissues including lungs, liver, spleen, ovaries, heart, and kidneys of POF mice. In mice, at 1week after intravenous transplantation, GFP labeled ES-MSCs were observed in the lungs, liver, spleen, ovaries, heart, and kidneys of POF mice, and the number of GFP labeled ES-MSCs in lungs, ovaries, and heart were higher than that in the spleen, kidneys, and liver. Herein, we investigated 3-hydroxymorphinan (3-HM) effects on mitochondrial biogenesis, oxidative stress, and lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Further, we explored 3-HM-associated molecular mechanisms. Mouse adipocyte 3T3-L1 cells were treated with 3-HM, and various protein expression levels were determined by western blotting analysis. Mitochondria accumulation and lipid accumulation were measured by staining methods. Cell toxicity was assessed by cell viability assay. We found that treatment of 3T3-L1 adipocytes with 3-HM increased expression of brown adipocyte markers, such as uncoupling protein-1 (UCP-1) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma coactivator 1-alpha (PGC-1α). 3-HM promotes mitochondrial biogenesis and its-mediated gene expression. Additionally, 3-HM treatment suppressed mitochondrial ROS generation and superoxide along with improved mitochondrial complex I activity. We found that treatment of 3-HM enhanced AMPK phosphorylation. selleck siRNA-mediated suppression of AMPK reversed all these changes in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. In sum, 3-HM promotes mitochondrial biogenesis and browning and attenuates oxidative stress and lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 adipocytes via AMPK signaling. Here we show that increased levels of the Notch intracellular domain (NICD) in the early mesoderm inhibit heart development, potentially through impaired induction of the second heart field (SHF), independently of the transcriptional effector RBP-J. Similarly, inhibiting Notch cleavage, shown to increase noncanonical Notch activity, suppressed SHF induction in embryonic stem cell (ESC)-derived mesodermal cells. In contrast, NICD overexpression in late cardiac progenitor cells lacking RBP-J resulted in an increase in heart size. The extra-randomness introduced in the ensemble reduces the variance of the predictions and improves out-of-sample accuracy. Cyanobacterial mats form peculiar and vulnerable micro-ecosystems at the entrance of caves and house a diversity of protists. Amongst them, Arcellinida testate amoebae have been traditionally used as bioindicators for environmental quality, notably because their narrow ecological tolerance and their key ecological position as top predators of the microbial foodwebs. We report here two new species of Arcellinida found in the cyanobacterial mats of cave Hundidero, in Sierra de Grazalema, Malaga province, whose traits suggest a narrow tolerance for changes in humidity. We provide a formal description for Difflugia alhadiqa sp. nov. and Heleopera baetica sp. nov. based on morphometrics and 18S rRNA gene data, and propose using the presence of these species to indicate the good health of the cyanobacterial mats, like miner's canaries for local climate.
