The apparent permeability coefficients (Papp × 10-6) of FITC-labeled fucoidan (FITC-fucoidan) were 26.23, 20.15, 17.93, 16.11 cm/sec, respectively, at the concentration of 10 μg/mL at 0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2 h. The absorption of FITC-fucoidan was suppressed by inhibitors of clathrin-mediated endocytosis, chlorpromazine, NH4Cl, and Dynasore; the inhibition rates were 84.24%, 74.61%, and 63.94%, respectively. This finding suggested that clathrin-mediated endocytosis was involved in fucoidan transport. This research aimed to compare the nutritional characteristics of four commercial and four local cultivars in order to better characterise the local ones and promote their use in animal nutrition. The seeds' weight and the chemical composition, including starch and the energy, was evaluated. The in vitro fermentation characteristics were studied for 48 h using bull's rumen fluid as inoculum. All the varieties showed the values' weight corresponding to the specific botanical typology. The varieties significantly differed for protein, starch and lignin (p less then 0.01) and structural carbohydrates (p less then 0.05) concentration. No significant differences were observed for energy content. All the in vitro fermentation parameters resulted significantly different among the varieties. Organic matter degradability ranged between 89.9% and 85.1% and the potential gas production from 367 to 325 mL/g. Fifteen mixed Santa Inês sheep, all non-castrated males, with initial body weight of 19.8 ± 1.64 kg, and 4 ± 0.35 months of age, were distributed in a complete randomized design into three treatments control (CT)-concentrate supplemented at 0.7% of body weight; CT + 300 mg of Zn/day; and CT + 2.5 mL of propylene glycol/kg LW0.75/day. Measurements were done in four periods during the rainy season, with 28 days of interval between each measurement. CH4 emission was measured using the SF6 tracer gas technique. CH4 emission per day was greater in PG than in CT and Zn (p 0.05). Here, we examine a set of fALS-linked Sod1 mutations that have been well-characterized and are known to possess variation in their biophysical characteristics. The zinc affinities of these mutants are evaluated here for the first time and then compared with the previously established value for wild-type Sod1 zinc affinity. Ccs does not have the same ability to promote zinc binding to these mutants as it does for the wild-type version of Sod1. Direct adaptation of an avian strain to human or reassortment between avian-origin gene segments with that of human strains are the two mechanisms for the emergence of pandemic viruses. While it was suggested that the 1918 pandemic virus is of avian origin, reassortment of 1918 human isolates and avian influenza viruses led to the generation of 1957 and 1968 pandemic viruses. Interestingly, the avian PB1 segment, which encodes the catalytic subunit of IAV polymerase, is present in the 1957 and 1968 pandemic viruses. Using the 2009 pandemic H1N1 virus as a model, whose polymerase contains a human-origin PB1 subunit, we demonstrate that the acquisition of an avian PB1 markedly enhances viral RNA synthesis. This enhancement is also effective in the absence of PB2 adaptive mutations, which are key determinants of host switching. Mechanistically, the avian-origin PB1 does not appear to affect polymerase assembly but imparts the reassorted pandemic polymerase-augmented viral primary transcription and replication. Moreover, compared to the parental pandemic polymerase, the reassorted polymerase displays comparable complementary RNA (cRNA)-stabilizing activity but is specifically enhanced in progeny viral RNA (vRNA) synthesis from cRNA in a trans-activating manner. Overall, our results provide the first insight into the mechanism via which avian-origin PB1 enhances viral RNA synthesis of the 2009 pandemic virus polymerase.Protocols for assessing the welfare of dairy cows in large scale intensive dairy systems in the developed world have been used extensively. Little attention has been paid to the use of similar welfare assessment protocols for small dairy enterprises in developing countries. We modified part of the standard assessment protocol and used it to assess aspects of the welfare of dairy cows in a field survey of 70 small farms in the Sirajgonj district of Bangladesh. Welfare indicators selected were mainly those of health and economic importance, such as lameness, lesions on the body and limbs, cleanliness levels, milk yield, and body condition. The study included physical examination of 700 cows and use of a structured questionnaire to collect data on health and management practices and farmers' perspectives about animal welfare. Mean milk yield, averaged across farms, was 10.3 L/d (range 6.3-14.2) and body condition assessment indicated that cows were, on average, thin. Hygiene management was often poor, with soiling of body parts with faeces.
