Compared to their short trials, elite male throwers had significantly less top-to-left and top-to-front rotations at left foot touchdown (P ≤ 0.042), and significantly less total angular momentum at release (P = 0.043) in long trials. Elite discus throwers should control the amount of rotations of the thrower-discus system to reduce the top-to-left roll of the discus during the flight to extend the aerodynamic distance.
Our study examined characteristics of adolescent and young adult study participants using gabapentinoids (gabapentin, pregabalin), with previous history of adolescent psychiatric inpatient hospitalization. Particular focus was on temporal association of age, at first prescription for gabapentinoids, to age at tobacco smoking initiation, regular alcohol use, diagnosis of substance dependence and prescriptions for benzodiazepines and opioids.
The initial study population contained 508 adolescents (300 females, 208 males) admitted to psychiatric inpatient care in Oulu University hospital between the ages 13-17 years. This study aimed to describe drug use patterns and motivations associated with substitution. We examined correlates of lifetime substitution among individuals with substance use disorder.
A cross-sectional study of 771 treatment-enrolled individuals. We used self-report for determining the lifetime prevalence, correlates, and motivations for substitution.
Of the 771 respondents, 570 (73.9%) reported ever substituting their preferred substance. The main incentives for substitution were availability (23.7%) and curiosity (20.2%). Among heroin or cannabis preferers, improved effects or less adverse effects of the substitute drug, self-medication, and managing withdrawal symptoms were significant substitution incentives. The secondary objective was to compare students' attitudes and beliefs in a biomedical and biopsychosocial practice orientation.Methods Swedish final-semester PT students (n = 151) completed the Reasoning 4 Change (R4C) instrument and the Pain Attitudes and Beliefs Scale for Physiotherapists. A blueprint was used for curricular categorization. The independent t-test was used.Results Students attending programs with BMCC curricula (n = 61) had superior scores compared with students without BMCC curricula (n = 90) in the following R4C variables, all of which were related to clinical reasoning focused on behavioral change Knowledge, Cognition, Self-efficacy, Input from the client, Functional behavioral analysis, and Strategies for behavioral change. Students who did not receive BMCC curricula scored higher in the R4C contextual factors and reported a greater biomedical practice orientation than students receiving BMCC curricula. There was no difference in the biopsychosocial practice orientation between groups.Conclusions Our findings support the benefit of structured entry-level PT curricula with BMCC on final-semester students' clinical reasoning skills focused on behavioral change and their level of biomedical practice orientation. Further, our findings elucidated educational opportunities to augment students' self-efficacy and strengthen their behavioral competencies in clinical reasoning. To combat drug-related litter, the Philadelphia Department of Public Health installed 7 public syringe disposal boxes (SDB) in Kensington, the neighborhood most impacted by the opioid crisis and home to a syringe exchange. Methods We used street- and business-intercepts to recruit residents (N=358) and business owners/staff (N=78) who completed a brief survey with two binary items measuring observing and using SDB. Multivariable logistic regression was used to assess factors independently associated with SDB observance and use. Results 78% (340/436) observed SDB and 34.1% (116/340) had ever used SDB among those who had seen them. Unstably housed persons had 4.3 times greater odds of observing SDB (Adjusted odds ratio [aOR= 4.29; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.56, 11.82) and had 2.5 times greater odds of using SDB (aOR = 2.51; 95% CI 1.33, 4.74) as did people who use opioids (aOR = 2.61; 95% CI 1.45, 4.72). Among individuals reporting opioid use who also saw SDB (n=123), those who were unstably housed were more likely to use SDB than those with stable housing (67.8% vs 45.3%, p=.012). Conclusion These results suggest Kensington residents, especially those who are unstably housed, use SDB once they see them in the neighborhood.We investigated the effects of jammer-type racing swimsuits (RS) on swimming performance during arm-stroke-only (pull) and whole-body stroke (swim) in 25-m front-crawl with maximal effort. Twelve well-trained male collegiate swimmers wore RS and a conventional swimsuit (CS) and performed three tests pull, swim, and pull using the system to measure active drag (MAD pull). Swimming velocity and intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) were determined in all tests. Stroke indices during pull and swim and drag-swimming velocity relationship and maximum propulsive power during MAD pull were also determined. Swimming velocities during pull and swim while wearing an RS (1.59 ± 0.13 and 1.77 ± 0.09 m·s-1, respectively) were significantly higher than those wearing a CS (1.57 ± 0.14 and 1.74 ± 0.08 m·s-1, respectively). Stroke length during pull and swim was significantly greater while wearing an RS (1.68 ± 0.12 and 1.83 ± 0.13 m, respectively) than wearing a CS (1.63 ± 0.10 and 1.81 ± 0.13 m, respectively). However, no significant differences were confirmed between the other variables in all tests.
