A novel protein-based gel named "Yu dong" prepared with fish (Cyprinus carpio L.) scale aqueous extract and enhanced by polysaccharides is described in this study. The effects of pectin, alginate, and sodium carboxyl methyl cellulose (CMC-Na) on FS gel formation, stability, textural characteristics, microstructure, and water distribution were evaluated. The results indicated the viscosity of the FS gels decreased and changed slowly as the addition of pectin. While, the addition of alginate enhanced the formation of FS gels. ABBV-2222 mouse As pectin addition in FS gels, the transition temperature decreased. When alginate and CMC-Na was added to the FS gels, the transition temperature increased. The addition of pectin, alginate, and CMC-Na to the FS gels significantly increased Gr from 44.5% to 71.99%, 61.86%, and 71.35%, respectively. Gel strength increased significantly as the addition of pectin, alginate, and CMC-Na. LF-NMR results showed that a moderate amount (0.2%) of polysaccharides bonded the protein and water more tightly, which was consistent with the SEM results showing gel structure with more uniform pores. This study provides a direct application of FS protein in preparing of gel food, which showing a better way to utilize the abandoned fish resource.A rapid colorimetric method using cysteine-modified silver nanoparticles (Cys-AgNPs) is applied for the detection of 3-monochloropropane-1,2-diol (3-MCPD). Indeed, in the presence of 3-MCPD, the color of Cys-AgNPs solution changes from yellow to pink within five minutes at 100 °C and pH 9.3. This change is mainly attributed to the ability of amino group of cysteine to react with 3-MCPD to form N-(2,3-dihydroxypropyl)-amino acid grafted on AgNPs (3-MCPD-Cys-AgNPs) in alkaline medium. This color change makes 3-MCPD to be clearly detectable by unassisted visual means even at 0.1 μg⋅mL-1. Besides, using UV-Vis spectroscopic technique, a linear range from 0.1 μg⋅mL-1 to 1.25 μg⋅mL-1 for 3-MCPD detection is obtained, with a calculated detection limit of 0.084 μg⋅mL-1. These results suggest that this sensing technique is sensitive to 3-MCPD and may have a substantial application in the rapid detection of food contaminants particularly, where quality and safety of food products are paramount concern.In this study, roasting was applied to enhance the volatile compound content and antioxidant activity of hot-air dried omija (Schisandra chinensis Baillon) fruit. The major volatile compounds were furfural, 1,8-cineole and terpinen-4-ol. Total volatile compound concentration in omija roasted at 150 ℃ for 15 min was approximately 4 times higher than that in hot-air dried omija. Contents of monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes in roasted omija were significantly increased, compared to that of the hot-air dried omija (P less then 0.05). The contents of schizandrin in extracts of hot-air dried omija and omija roasted at 150 ℃ for 10 min were determined to be 28.9 and 106.5 mg/100 g extract, respectively. The content of gomisin A from roasted omija was about 5 times higher than that of hot-air dried omija. Through this study, it is believed that the usability of omija will be expanded.Lactoferrin (LF), a bioactive multifunctional protein of the transferrin family, is found mainly in the secretions of all mammals, especially in milk. In the present study, a hybridoma cell (LF8) secreting IgG against bovine LF was screened, and the purified LF8 mAb showed high specificity and affinity to bovine LF. The linear range of ic-ELISA to detect LF was 9.76 ~ 625 ng/mL, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.01 ng/mL. The average recovery of intra- and inter-assay were (104.45 ± 4.12)% and (107.13 ± 4.72)%, respectively. The LOD of colloidal gold- and AuNFs-based strip by naked eye were 9.7 and 2.4 ng/mL, respectively, and the detection time was less than 10 min without any samples pretreatment and expensive equipment. The developed ELISA and lateral flow immunosensors based on specific IgG could be used directly for rapid detection of the bovine LF content in cow milk samples.
We evaluated a rapid chromatographic immunoassay (IgG/IgM antibodies) and an ELISA assay to diagnose COVID-19 in patient sat two Brazilian hospitals.
A total of 122 subjects with COVID-19 were included 106 SARS-COV-2 RT-PCR-positive patients and 16 RT-PCR-negative patients with symptoms and chest computed tomography (CT) consistent with COVID-19. link2 Ninety-six historical blood donation samples were used as controls. Demographic and clinical characteristics were retrieved from electronic records. Sensitivity and specificity were calculated, as were their 95% binomial confidence intervals using the Clopper-Pearson method. All analyses were performed in R version 3.6.3.
The sensitivity of the chromatographic immunoassay in all RT-PCR-positive patients, irrespective of the timing of symptom onset, was 85.8% (95% binomial CI 77.7% to 91.9%). This increased with time after symptom onset, and at >14 days was 94.9% (85.9% to 98.9%). The specificity was 100% (96.4% to 100%). 15/16 (94%) RT- PCR-negative cases tested positive. The most frequent comorbidities were hypertension and diabetes mellitus and the most frequent symptoms were fever, cough, and dyspnea. All RT-PCR-negative patients had pneumonia. The most frequent thoracic CT findings were ground glass changes (n = 11, 68%), which were bilateral in 9 (56%) patients, and diffuse reticulonodular infiltrates (n = 5, 31%).

The fish wastewater could be incorporated into biogas reactors, but currently, the effects of salinity on the biomethanation process are poorly known. This study aimed to assess the toxicity of fish wastewater with different salinities on the biomethanation process and to propose optimum co-digestion scenarios for maximal methane potential and safe use in biogas plants. Results showed that, depending on salinity and organic content, it is possible to efficiently co-digest from 3.22 to 61.85% fish wastewater (v/v, wastewater/manure) and improve the maximum methane production rate from 2.72 to 61.85%, respectively compared to cow manure mono-digestion. Additionally, salinity was identified as the main inhibitor of biomethanation process with a half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of 4.37 g L-1, while sulphate reduction was identified as a secondary inhibitor.Land degradation is one of the most serious environmental problems worldwide. To combat land degradation, China has implemented a series of ecological restoration programs (ERPs). This study selected the northern dryland of China as a case study to examine the efficiency of ERPs, and the response of soil loss to afforestation efforts and climatic conditions was discussed using the principles from the ecological theory of non-linear ecosystem dynamics. Owing to the combined impacts of declining wind speed and rapid vegetation restoration, the soil erosion for the entire region was substantially reduced from 1990 to 2015. However, the rainfall fluctuated considerably, particularly for the period from the late 1990s to early 2000s. Several drought events to some extent inhibited vegetation growth and further offset afforestation efforts, resulting in degradations in vegetation structure and soil retention function, which have been aggravating soil erosion since 2005. In certain representative sandstorm areas, limited increase in rainfall was not enough to promote vegetation growth, and therefore the vegetation cover did not present increasing trends and, in some cases, even declined significantly. The responses in terms of land degradation to climatic conditions and afforestation efforts behaved in a non-linear dynamic manner, providing essential insights into appropriate timings, climate-induced windows of opportunity, and risk in recovering and sustaining ecosystems, and eventually moving towards the land degradation neutrality (LDN) target. The climate-induced windows of opportunity and risk are critical in identifying the time for starting human interventions to mitigate and halt land degradation. Meanwhile, effective investment actions should be taken according to existing environmental conditions and critical thresholds, to achieve LDN at minimum risk and cost.The aim of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all by 2030. This Virtual Special Issue (VSI) comprises of 14 diverse case studies, methods and tools that provide suggestions for interventions which directly or indirectly support the achievement of the UN SDGs.Climate change impacts on the hydroclimate of the Nile River Basin (NRB) tend to be analyzed mostly based on short-term data and confined to a specific hydroclimate variable at sub-basin level. This study provides a better understanding of the hydrological cycle and the hydroclimate variability of NRB and aim to find the origin of the driving forces. Firstly, eight change point detection methods were used to investigate the abrupt changes in the NRB hydroclimate. Next, we used wavelet transform coherence (WTC), spatial correlation, and detrended cross-correlation (DCCA) to analyze the inter-annual to multidecadal variabilities of the hydroclimate of NRB because they are effective in capturing the temporal variability at multiple scales. Our results show significant hydroclimatic changes and trends attributed to climate change impact after the 1970s. link3 For instance, precipitation and relative humidity (RH) decreasing at 16.2 mm/decade and 0.3 5%/decade, respectively. In contrast, geopotential height (GPH), climand La Niño episodes. The increase in GPH anomalies associated with El Niño warming indicates a greater saturation vapor pressure, which at lower levels cause a lower dew point and a higher surface temperature. In addition, El Niño-driven changes to vector and meridional wind patterns created a strong anti-cyclonic wave of dry air that keeps moving dry air into the NRB. These waves propagate southward towards the NRB, controlling the circulation of air mass, heat, and moisture fluxes and affect the surface weather patterns of NRB.
