In conclusion, staphylococcal EVs possess potent cytolytic and immunomodulatory properties.Severe traumatic skeletal muscle injuries, such as volumetric muscle loss (VML), result in the obliteration of large amounts of skeletal muscle and lead to permanent functional impairment. Current clinical treatments are limited in their capacity to regenerate damaged muscle and restore tissue function, promoting the need for novel muscle regeneration strategies. Advances in tissue engineering, including cell therapy, scaffold design, and bioactive factor delivery, are promising solutions for VML therapy. Herein, we review tissue engineering strategies for regeneration of skeletal muscle, development of vasculature and nerve within the damaged muscle, and achievements in immunomodulation following VML. In addition, we discuss the limitations of current state of the art technologies and perspectives of tissue-engineered bioconstructs for muscle regeneration and functional recovery following VML.In this paper a morphological differentiation tool of bovine and equine hair for their identification in forensic investigations is provided. 30 animals were used, fifteen adult bovines of the "Siboney de Cuba" breed and fifteen adult equines of the "Criolla" breed. These species are the most bred in Cuba and, at the same time, the most exposed to poaching and theft crimes. Hair from the cows was sampled from the dorsal region, the lateral region and the ventral region; on the other hand, the horses' hair was sampled from the dorsal region of the body, of the mane and of the tail. The tendency of GSR to drop off easily from the shooter may hinder forensic detection; this well-known phenomenon is accelerated by various common physical activities so that the number of particles detected on a suspect decreases over time. After shooting incidents, suspects will often try to cover their tracks by taking a shower. In these cases, it was assumed that no GSR will be detected upon examining the suspect's hand and hair. In the present study, we provide a way to overcome this loss of evidence by taking advantage of another occurrence, namely secondary transfer. Our participants were asked to take a shower after shooting a firearm. Samples were thereafter collected from the used bath towels and were found to contain up to a few dozen particles characteristic of GSR, including very large particles (>45 µm). The detection of GSR on a suspect's towel may provide significant forensic evidence aiding an investigation. When a shooter tries to remove evidence by taking a shower, sampling the towels that he may have used can preserve important evidence and connect a suspect to a shooting incident.Many high-yielding rice cultivars with large sink size (total number of spikelet per unit area × mean grain weight) have been developed, but some japonica cultivars developed in Japan often fail to attain the expected high yield due to low sink strength of spikelets. Although there is natural variation in sink strength of spikelets among high-yielding cultivars, metabolic factors involved in the natural variation and relationships of sink strength in spikelets with final percentage of filled spikelets are not fully understood. In the present study, we examined cultivar differences in sink strength for superior and inferior spikelets (i.e. earlier fertilizing spikelets with faster growth and later fertilizing ones with slower growth, respectively) in a panicle, using each spikelet at 10 d after the onset of development (10 DAD) when starch accumulation in endosperm was actively proceeding. Nine high-yielding cultivars were used five japonica-dominant and four indica-dominant cultivars. Cultivar differences were observed in starch contents at 10 DAD in each spikelet type, and indica cultivars had higher starch contents than japonica cultivars in both superior and inferior spikelets. In addition, starch contents at 10 DAD were closely related to percentage of filled grains at maturity in both spikelet types. The activities of sucrose synthase (SUS) and uridine diphosphoglucose pyrophosphorylase (UGP), and the protein levels of phosphorylase 1 (Pho1), were higher in indica than japonica cultivars, and were positively correlated with starch contents at 10 DAD for both superior and inferior spikelets; although metabolic states, revealed from relations between intermediate metabolites and starch contents, differed among spikelet types. Consequently, it was considered that SUS and UGP at the step from sucrose cleavage to adenosine diphosphoglucose synthesis, and Pho1 at the starch biosynthesis step, were key metabolic factors involved in cultivar differences of sink strength (ability to synthesize starch).Sucrose utilisation for the synthesis of cellular components involved in growth and development and the accumulation of biomass determines diversity in the plant kingdom; sucrose utilisation and partitioning also underpin crop yields. As a complex process the use of sucrose for the partitioning of plant products for yield is decided by the interaction of several regulatory hubs and the integration of metabolism and development. Understanding the regulation of assimilate partitioning has been a grand challenge in plant and crop science. There are emerging examples of genes and processes that appear important for assimilate partitioning that underpin yield in crops and which are amenable to intervention. Enzymes of carbon metabolism were some of the first targets in attempts to modify assimilate partitioning at the beginning (source) and end (sink) of the whole plant assimilate partitioning process. Metabolic enzymes are subject to regulatory and homeostatic mechanisms, a key factor to consider in modifying assimilate partitioning. Trehalose 6-phosphate, as a sucrose signal, may represent a special case in its ability to regulate and coordinate source and sink processes. This review summarises recent progress in understanding the underlying regulators of assimilate partitioning and the current and potentially most promising routes to crop yield enhancement with a main focus on cereals. A framework for how source-sink may regulate whole plant assimilate partitioning involving a few key elements and the central importance of reproductive development is presented.The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and the cytoskeleton are functionally linked in living cells. Identification of cancer-related pathways could help researchers understand the mechanisms of complex diseases well. Whereas, most current signaling pathway analysis methods take no account of the gene interaction variations within pathways. Furthermore, considering that some pathways have connection with two or more cancer types, while some are likely to be cancer-type specific pathways. Identifying cancer-type specific pathways contributes to interpreting the different mechanisms of different cancer types. In this study, we first proposed a pathway analysis method named Pathway Analysis of Intergenic Regulation (PAIGR) to identify pathways with dysregulation between genes and compared the performance of this method with four existing methods on four colorectal cancer (CRC) datasets. The results showed that PAIGR could find cancer-related pathways more accurately. Moreover, in order to explore the relationship between the identified pathways and the cancer type, we constructed a pathway interaction network, in which nodes and edges represented pathways and interactions between pathways respectively. Highly connected pathways were considered to play a central role in an extensive range of biological processes, while sparsely connected pathways are considered to have certain specificity. Our results showed that pathways identified by PAIGR had a low nodal degree (i.e., a few numbers of interactions), which suggested that most of these pathways were cancer-type specific.
