The risk of pulmonary embolism (PE) in patients with Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is recognized. The prevalence of PE in patients with respiratory deterioration at the Emergency Department (ED), the regular ward, and the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) are not well-established.

We aimed to investigate how often PE was present in individuals with COVID-19 and respiratory deterioration in different settings, and whether or not disease severity as measured by CT-severity score (CTSS) was related to the occurrence of PE.

Between April 6th and May 3rd, we enrolled 60 consecutive adult patients with confirmed COVID-19 from the ED, regular ward and ICU who met the pre-specified criteria for respiratory deterioration.

A total of 24 (24/60 40% (95% CI 28-54%)) patients were diagnosed with PE, of whom 6 were in the ED (6/23 26% (95% CI 10-46%)), 8 in the regular ward (8/24 33% (95% CI 16-55%)), and 10 in the ICU (10/13 77% (95% CI 46-95%)). CTSS (per unit) was not associated with the occurrence of PE (age and sex-adjusted OR 1.06 (95%CI 0.98-1.15)).

The safety and efficacy of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) in intermediate-high risk pulmonary embolism (PE) are unknown. The aims of the present study were to describe outcomes of patients receiving early apixaban or rivaroxaban prescription rather than the recommended delayed prescription strategy.

Retrospective post-hoc analysis based on prospectively collected data from a multicenter cohort including all consecutive PE patients stratified as intermediate-high risk. Group definitions were early group with DOAC prescription <72h after admission; delayed group with DOAC prescription between 72h and discharge. The 30-day primary efficacy outcome was a clinical composite of all-cause death and hemodynamic decompensation. The 30-day primary safety outcome was major bleeding.

Among 2411 patients admitted with PE, 302 were treated with a DOAC for an intermediate-high risk PE 34.2% in the early group and 65.9% in the delayed group. The primary outcome occurred in 4.8% (including 1 death and 4 hemodynamic decompensations) in the early DOAC group and in 9.0% in the delayed DOAC group (OR, 0.44, 95% CI 0.15-1.30). The rate of major bleeding did not differ between groups (OR, 0.99; 95% CI 0.45-2.18). The length of stay was numerically shorter in the early group whereas the other outcomes did not differ significantly.

Oxaliplatin represents a main component of cytotoxic treatment regimens in colorectal cancer (CRC). Given its efficacy, oxaliplatin is frequently re-administered in the context of the continuum of care in metastatic CRC (mCRC). However, efficacy and tolerability of this therapeutic strategy has not been comprehensively assessed.

Fluorescence microscopy indicated the release of approximately 25,000 micron-sized microplastic particles into one cup of hot water in 15 min (100 ml) while scanning electron micrographs indicate 102 + 21.1 × 106 sub-micron-sized particles/ml into the same volume of liquid. Toxic heavy metals like Pb, Cr, and Cd were detected in the films which can be transferred into hot water. Elemental analysis shows a decrease in the percentage of elements like C, H, and N (by weight) due to exposure to hot water.
