Pragmatic Genuine Philosophy

Pragmatism places emphasis on experience and context. It may not have a clear ethical framework or foundational principles. This could result in a loss of idealistic aspirations and a shift in direction.

Definition

Pragmatic is a word used to describe things or people who are practical, logical and sensible. It is frequently used to contrast with idealistic which is a person or an idea that is based on high principles or ideals. When making a decision, the pragmatic person is aware of the world and the conditions. They are focused on what is achievable and realistically feasible instead of attempting to reach the ideal path of action.

Pragmatism is an emerging philosophical movement that emphasizes the importance of practical consequences in determining the truth, meaning, or value. It is a third option to the dominant continental and analytic tradition of philosophy. It was developed by Charles Sanders Peirce, William James, and Josiah Royce, pragmatism developed into two distinct streams of thought, one tending toward relativism and the other toward realism.

One of the most important problems in pragmatism is the nature of truth. Many pragmatists recognize that truth is a valuable concept, but disagree on how to define it or how it is applied in practice. One method, heavily influenced by Peirce and James, concentrates on how people resolve issues and make assertions, and focuses on the speech-acts and justification projects users of language use to determine the truth of an assertion. One method, which was influenced by Rorty's followers, concentrates on the more mundane aspects of truth, such as its ability to generalize, praise and be cautious, and is less concerned with a complex theory of truth.

These pragmatists from the classical period focused on the theory of inquiry as well as the nature of truth. Their influence spread through a number of influential American thinkers, including John Dewey (1859-1952), who applied their theories to education and other aspects of social improvement, and Jane Addams (1860-1935) who founded social work.

Neo-pragmatists, on the other hand, focus on the idea of 'ideal warranted assertion, which states that an idea is genuinely true if a claim made about it can be justified in a certain way to a specific group of people.

There are however some issues with this perspective. The most frequent criticism is that it could be used to support all sorts of silly and illogical theories. The pragmatists rejected the sharp dichotomies of analytic philosophy such as value and fact as well as experience and thought, mind and body, analytic and synthetic, and so on. They also rejected the notion that truth was something that was fixed or objective, and instead viewed it like a constantly-evolving, socially determined concept.

The pragmatic theory has been criticized for centuries but in recent times it has received more attention. These include the idea that pragmatism collapses when applied to moral issues, and that its claim that "what is effective" is nothing more than relativism, albeit with an unpolished appearance.
