PURPOSE Currently, no consistent guidelines for CT scans used within PET/CT examinations are available. This systematic review provides an up-to-date overview of studies to answer the following questions What are the specific CT protocols used in PET/CT? What are the possible purposes of requiring a CT study within a PET/CT scan? Is the CT protocol obtained from a dosimetric optimisation study? MATERIALS AND METHOD PubMed/MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, Embase and Scopus were systematically searched for relevant studies in accordance with the PRISMA statement. The literature search was conducted from January 2007 until June 2019. Data derived from studies were standardized in order to reduce possible biases, and they were divided into clinically homogeneous subgroups (adult, child or phantom). Subsequently, we divided the CT protocol intents into 3 types (anatomic localization only, attenuation correction only and diagnostic purpose). A narrative approach was used to summarise datasets and to investigate their hetopment of new technologies.BACKGROUND Cancer is a risk factor for perioperative deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism (DVT/PE). However, there is a paucity of data on non-malignant digestive diseases. In this study, we aimed to investigate the incidence of DVT/PE among patients, following surgery for acute appendicitis and other digestive diseases. METHODS We retrospectively reviewed the records of patients who underwent surgical procedures involving the digestive system between April 2018 and March 2019 attended by anesthesiologists (n = 536). RESULTS DVT/PE developed in seven patients (7/77, 9.1%, 95% confidence interval [CI] 3.7-17.8%) after surgery for acute appendicitis, and in six patients (6/83, 7.2%, 95%CI 2.7-15.1%) after elective surgery for colorectal cancer. Among the acute appendicitis group, six patients (6/30 20.0%) with complicated appendicitis (gangrenous or perforated appendicitis), and one patient (1/47 2.1%) with simple appendicitis showed postoperative DVT/PE. Patients with complicated appendicitis had a higher risk of DVT/PE than those with simple appendicitis with an odds ratio of 11.5 (95%CI 1.3-101.1). this website CONCLUSIONS Although patients with acute appendicitis lack three of the risk factors for DVT/PE (cancer, long operative time, and older age), their 95% CI for the incidence of DVT/PE was comparable to that of patients undergoing elective surgery for colorectal cancer. Therefore, caution must be exercised during the perioperative period for preventing DVT/PE.OBJECTIVES This study aimed to investigate the relationship between aging and tooth loss on masseter muscle quantity and quality. MATERIALS AND METHODS This cross-sectional study was conducted among 112 participants (in their 20s to 90s) who were independent in activities of daily living and were able to follow verbal commands. Exclusion criteria comprised participants with a lack of molar occlusal support, diseases that could affect muscle function, or temporomandibular disorder. Age, tooth loss, and weight were documented, and masseter muscle thickness (MMT) and masseter muscle echo intensity (MMEI) were measured using an ultrasonic diagnostic apparatus. A multiple regression analysis was used to determine the relationship between MMT, MMEI, aging, and tooth loss, among each sex. The significance level in the statistical analysis was p  less then  0.05. RESULTS In males, aging was a significant explanatory variable for MMT (adjusted R2 = 0.27), while both aging and weight were significantly associated with MMEI (adjusted R2 = 0.54). In females, tooth loss and aging were significant explanatory variables for MMT (adjusted R2 = 0.36) and MMEI (adjusted R2 = 0.5), respectively. In both men and women, MMT and MMEI were highly correlated. CONCLUSIONS Masseter muscles in males were more likely to be attenuated by aging than in females. The main attenuation factors were observed to differ between MMT and MMEI in women. CLINICAL RELEVANCE In females, preservation of the natural dentition or prosthetic treatment may be effective for maintaining masseter muscle characteristics. In males, additional approaches, such as resistance exercise training, may be necessary.Help seeking for anxiety tends to be low in adolescents. Identifying modifiable factors that may facilitate help seeking is important. The aim of the current study is to test the effects of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) literacy and stigma (personal and perceived) on attitudes and intentions toward seeking help from professionals and key adult sources. 1767 adolescents aged 12-18 years participated in the current study and completed measures of GAD literacy, GAD stigma, professional help-seeking attitudes, and intentions to seek help from a range of sources. The results of the study found that participants had limited GAD literacy and up to 20% personally agreed with stigmatising statements about GAD. Participants reported greater intentions to seek help from parents than from formal sources. More positive attitudes toward seeking help were associated with higher levels of GAD literacy (p  less then  0.001) and lower personal GAD stigma (p  less then  0.001). Lower perceived GAD stigma was associated with increased intentions to seek help from their mothers (p  less then  0.05) or fathers (p  less then  0.01), while lower personal GAD stigma was also associated with help-seeking intentions from their mothers (p  less then  0.05). Higher perceived GAD stigma was associated with intentions to seek help from nobody (p  less then  0.001). Overall, the current study highlights the important role that parents can play in the help-seeking process for adolescents, with parents often the most accessible source of help. Improving parent and adolescent knowledge and attitudes towards GAD may help to improve early help seeking in young people.A triple recognition voltammetric method for the determination of brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) is described. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and magnetic nanoparticles (MagNPs), sized 26 and 310 nm, respectively, were synthesized and characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), FT-IR, dynamic light scattering (DLS), and Z-potential measurements. Antibody-modified MagNPs and methylene blue-labeled aptamer (Apt-MB)-modified AuNPs were used as an identifier, a signal reporter, and an amplifier, respectively. In the presence of BNP, the magnetic gold nanocomposite is formed through cascade conjugation via specific interaction. It then hybridized with complementary DNA (cDNA) on the interface, thereby amplifying the current signal of Apt-MB and increasing the selectivity of the immunoassay. Results obtained demonstrate the development of a highly selective method with a detection limit of 0.56 pg mL-1 and a linear response over the concentration range 1-10,000 pg mL-1. The standard deviation of the method is less then  6% while the recovery ranged from 92.2 to 104.2%. Graphical abstract Schematic representation of triple recognition electrochemical immunosensor based on two functionalized nanoparticles (antibody-modified magnetic nanoparticle (MNP-Ab) and aptamer-modified gold nanoparticle (AuNPs-Apt)) for determination of brain natriuretic peptide (BNP).PURPOSE Posterior fusion of the craniocervical junction (CCJ) has always been challenging in children with rare congenital diseases and malformations. At our institution, the introduction of the translaminar C2 screw technique led to a significant improvement in the quality of treatment. METHODS Retrospective analysis of a pediatric cohort at a single institution who underwent CCJ posterior fusion between 2007 and 2018. Patients were divided into group 1 (other posterior fusion techniques, n = 12) and group 2 (translaminar axis screw placement, n = 19). Diagnosis, sex, age at surgery, surgical technique, immobilization, revisions, fusion, reduction, and complications were assessed. RESULTS Follow-up ranged from 12 to 145 months (mean 50.7). The initial fusion rate detected at 3 months by CT differed significantly (66, 7% in group 1 vs. 100% in group 2, p = 0.018). Full reduction of C1/C2 malalignments was achieved in 41, 6% of group 1 versus 84, 2% of group 2 (p = 0.007). Immobilization was applied in 83, 3% of group 1 versus 26, 3% of group 2 (p = 0.0032). Ten complications were treated conservatively, and 15 events required revision surgery (80% in group 1 vs. 20% in group 2). Eight complications were related to immobilization. CONCLUSIONS The implementation of the translaminar C2 technique resulted in significantly more safety and efficiency regarding pediatric posterior fusion CCJ surgery at our institution, with significantly higher rates of rigid fixation, full reduction, and fusion, and significantly lower rates of complications and immobilization. All simulations were performed in thermal equilibrium and for a temperature range of 0.5-1500 K, considering the canonical ensemble model. We predicted the thermal properties energy, enthalpy, enthalpy change, Gibbs free energy, entropy, and specific heat at constant pressure with respect to temperature. In addition, we compared the performances of the DFT functional hybrid B3LYP and the basis set 6-311++G(d,p) and PM3 methods, in order to determine their accuracy for thermodynamic predictions relating to the fuels. Calculations for combustion enthalpy were carried out using the following methods B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p), B3LYP/6-31+G(d), CBS-QB3, G3, G4, and G3/G4. The results showed good agreement with measured values, indicating that DFT may be a good method to calculate and predict thermodynamic properties of the combustion reactions of kerosene and biokerosene.Antimicrobial activity of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) has been well documented in earlier studies. As their efficient role in combating phytopathogens has begun recently, there is a huge scope to explore their effectiveness in agriculture. Considering the strong antifungal activity of biosynthesized AgNPs (as reported in our previous study), our main aim is to elucidate their antibacterial activity against bacterial plant pathogens to authenticate their wide range of agricultural applications. The present manuscript highlights the potential role of biosynthesized AgNPs against Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) causing disastrous sheath blight disease of rice worldwide. We observed strong antibacterial activity of biosynthesized AgNPs (size ~ 12 nm) against Xoo at 20, 30 and 50 µg/mL concentrations. The significant inhibitory impact of AgNPs on biofilm formation by Xoo was noted even at the lower dose of 5 µg/mL (p = 0.001). Maximum biofilm inhibition (p = 0.000) was caused at 50 µg/mL concentration of AgNPs in comparison to control. Furthermore, disease suppression by biosynthesized AgNPs was authenticated under greenhouse conditions. Foliar spray of AgNPs significantly reduced the blight symptoms in rice sheaths as shown by 9.25% DLA (% Diseased leaf area) as compared to 33.91% DLA in Xoo inoculated rice plants. Altogether, our data suggest that biosynthesized AgNPs based nanoformulation can be applied for successful management of blight disease of rice. In addition, the antibiofilm strategies instigated by AgNPs can be exploited against a wide range of bacterial phytopathogens. In light of rapidly emerging antibiotic-resistant microbial strains, the current work provides an alternate effective platform for the application of nanoformulation for augmenting sustainability in the agriculture.
