Online data have real-world meaning, and the ethical treatment of individuals and communities must not be marginalized when conducting internet-based research. As ethics frameworks originally developed for biomedical applications are inadequate for these methods, we propose that research activities involving the analysis of preexisting online data be treated analogous to offline social science methods, in particular, nondeceptive covert observation. By treating internet users and their data with respect and due consideration, conservationists can uphold the public trust needed to effectively address real-world issues.In this study, a composite of zerovalent copper-biochar was investigated for its ability to remove lead from water. The prepared material was characterized by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffractomter (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The pH effect on adsorption of lead was investigated within the range of 2-8 and the effect of temperature was studied at 303, 308, 313, and 318 K. The kinetics of lead adsorption on biochar composite was evaluated and the equilibrium time of 12 hr was established. To further evaluate the nature of adsorption, Langmuir model was tested and the adsorption capacities were evaluated for lead adsorption on the surface of copper biochar composite. The activation energy, entropy, and enthalpy values indicated the adsorption phenomenon to be chemisorptive and spontaneous in nature. Comparison of adsorption capacities with the reported adsorbents in the literature concluded zerovalent copper-biochar composite to be an efficient adsorbent for the removal of lead in the experimental conditions under study. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS Highly efficient composite of zerovalent copper with biochar was synthesized for lead adsorption. XPS and XRD shows the presence of zerovalent copper in the biochar composite. pH and temperature were the main governing factors in the adsorption process. Adsorption capacity for lead is higher than many of the reported adsorbents.Measuring the quality of life in family caregivers of people in palliative care is essential to document the impact of care on the caregiver. This study aimed to adapt and validate a Latin American-Spanish version of the QOLLTI-F scale in family caregivers of palliative care patients. This study was conducted between May and November 2019 in Medellin, Colombia. We develop three phases translation and semantic adaptation (n = 17), face and content validity (n = 21), construct validity, internal consistency (n = 208) and test-retest reliability (n = 35). Main family caregivers of stage-IV cancer patients receiving palliative treatment, participated. In the translation and semantic adaptation, some items were adjusted following the caregivers' recommendations. In face validity, Fleiss' Kappa was over 0.65 for family caregivers. In content validity, Fleiss' Kappa ranged from 0.54 to 1 for experts. In construct validity, the original version seven-factor structure did not show appropriate model fit indices. The data revealed instead a new 3-factor structure related to (1) impact of care-giving, (2) social and healthcare interactions and (3) meaning of life. Cronbach's alpha was 0.83 for the overall scale. Test-retest reliability was 0.87 between measurements 1 and 2. This study found that The Latin American-Spanish version of the QOLLTI-F scale is an understandable, useful, and relevant tool for family caregivers of people with cancer receiving palliative care. Future research is needed to confirm the factor structure identified in this study.Despite its successes, the U.S. Endangered Species Act (ESA) has proven challenging to implement due to funding limitations, workload backlog, and other problems. As threats to species survival intensify and as more species come under threat, the need for the ESA and similar conservation laws and policies in other countries to function efficiently has grown. Attempts by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) to streamline ESA decisions include multispecies recovery plans and habitat conservation plans. We address species status assessment (SSA), a USFWS process to inform ESA decisions from listing to recovery, within the context of multispecies and ecosystem planning. Although existing SSAs have a single-species focus, ecosystem-based research can efficiently inform multiple SSAs within a region and provide a foundation for transition to multispecies SSAs in the future. We considered at-risk grassland species and ecosystems within the southeastern United States, where a disproportionate number of rare and endemic species are associated with grasslands.
