2 forms of short-interval intracortical inhibition throughout human engine cortex.
The conserved microRNA396 (miR396) is involved in growth, development, and abiotic stress responses in a variety of plants by regulating target genes. Here, we obtained transgenic Chrysanthemum indicum (C. indicum) overexpressing the cin-miR396a gene. The transgenic plants (TGs) had longer internodes and fewer epidermal hairs in contrast with the wild-type (WT) control. cin-miR396a overexpression in C. indicum reduced salt tolerance and drought tolerance. After salt and drought stress compared with WT plants, the transgenic C. indicum exhibited a relative decrease in leaf water content, and the leaf free proline content, also exhibited a relative increase, in the leaf conductivity and leaf Malondialdehyde content, while the total chlorophyll content did not differ significantly from WT, and the Na+/K+ ratio in the roots of transgenic C. indicum increased after salt stress. We also identified two target genes of cin-miR396a, CiGRF1 and CiGRF5, whose expression was induced by salt and drought treatments and suppressed in transgenic C. indicum. Taken together, our results reveal a unique role for the regulatory module of miR396a-GRFs in C. indicum development and response to abiotic stresses. cin-miR396a plays a negative regulatory role in C. indicum in response to salt and drought stresses. The conversion of primary forests to cultivation brings a significant change in soil carbon (C) forms. In the foothills of the Eastern Himalayan Region of India (Manipur), such conversions are prevalent. However, little is known about the response of C forms, particularly in deep soil, to land use conversion in the region. We evaluated changes in soil C forms (total organic, inorganic, and pools) and microbiological properties (up to 1.0 m depth) mediated by C when the 45-year-old forest had been cultivated for 18-25 years. The cultivated land uses were tree-based agroforestry (LAF legumes, NAF non-legumes), horticultural fruits (WHF woody, NHF non-wood, mainly vegetables), and paddy agriculture system (AUS upland, ALS lowlands). Forest conversion significantly (p 0.45 m-1.0 m). Forests converted to seasonal cultivation (upland rice and vegetables) caused higher degradation of soil C forms and overall soil health in the Himalayan foothills of northeastern India. We suggest the promotion of Agroforestry based on legumes (Parkia spp.) and woody fruits (mango/citrus/guava) in the uplands to minimize soil C degradation while ensuring nutritional security in the hill agro-ecosystems of the Indian Himalayas.A review of published literature was conducted to present the concentrations and composition profiles of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from significant sources to the environment. The major sources of PFAS to the environment are categorized under direct and indirect sources. The characteristic compounds and concentrations are summarized as found from direct sources such as manufacturing facilities, aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) applications, metal coating operations, and textile and paper coating operations; and from indirect sources such as landfills and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The major findings are 1) among the aqueous matrices for which data were reviewed, groundwater impacted by AFFF contamination showed the highest median concentrations for both perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), while the second-highest median concentrations were associated with landfill leachates for PFOA and metal-plating sources for PFOS; 2) many of the unknown polyfluorinated precursors present in AFFF-impacted sites could potentially convert to persistent PFAS by abiotic or biotic transformation, and therefore could act as the long-term source of contamination to the environment; 3) part per billion (ppb) concentrations of PFAS were detected in water bodies surrounding fluorochemical manufacturing plants; 4) in consumer products such as textile, paper, and personal care products, PFOA concentrations were an order of magnitude higher compared to other PFAS; 5) biotransformation products such as fluorotelomer carboxylic acids (FTCAs) and perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) are detected in landfill leachates and WWTP effluents; and 6) many studies have shown increased PFAA concentrations in WWTP effluents compared to influents. This work provides a comprehensive review of the literature on the PFAS concentration and composition trends of select non-polymeric PFAS in different sources.Cold plasma based treatment of contaminated water is becoming a promising novel green remediation option. This study assessed the performance of two different cold plasma reactors, using, respectively, a self-pulsing discharge (SPD) and a multipin corona discharge (MCD), in the degradation of dimethyl phthalate (DMP), a persistent and ubiquitous pollutant of the aquatic environment. The process kinetics and energy efficiency, as well as the main plasma generated reactive species were determined under various operating conditions concerning the plasma feed gas and flowrate, the voltage polarity, the input power, the DMP initial concentration, the liquid conductivity, and the aqueous matrix used to prepare DMP solutions for these experiments. The MCD reactor, operated with air as plasma feed gas and negative voltage polarity, gave the best results in terms of rate and energy efficiency. Moreover, variations in plasma input power and in the liquid conductivity have limited effect on DMP degradation rate, making this reactor suitable for treating liquids with a range of initial conductivities The effects of DMP initial concentration on its rate of degradation and on the process energy efficiency were also investigated. Differences in the efficiency of production and distribution of plasma generated reactive species, notably •OH and H2O2, observed for the two tested reactors are discussed in terms of different extension of the plasma/liquid interface and diffusion into the bulk solution. It is proposed that among the reactive species, •OH foremost, and O3 to a lesser extent, play a pivotal role in DMP degradation, while the contribution of H2O2 appears to be limited. The rate of DMP degradation was not drastically different in Milli-Q water and in tap water, a positive outcome in view of practical applications of the technology. The lower rate observed in tap than in Milli-Q water is attributed to the presence of bicarbonate and carbonate, which are known scavengers of hydroxyl radicals.Estrone (E1), 17α-estradiol (17α-E2), 17β-estradiol (17β-E2), and estriol (E3) are persistent in livestock manure and present serious pollution concerns because they can trigger endocrine disruption at part-per-trillion levels. This study conducted a global analysis of estrogen occurrence in manure using all literature data over the past 20 years. Besides, predicted environmental concentration (PEC) in soil and water was estimated using fate models, and risk/harm quotient (RQ/HQ) methods were applied to screen risks on children as well as on sensitive aquatic and soil species. The estradiol equivalent values ranged from 6.6 to 4.78 × 104 ng/g and 12.4 to 9.46 × 104 ng/L in the solid and liquid fraction. The estrogenic potency ranking in both fractions were 17β-E2> E1>17α-E2>E3. RQs of measured environmental concentration in the liquid fraction pose medium (E3) to high risk (E1, 17α-E2 & 17β-E2) to fish but are lower than risks posed by xenoestrogens. However, the RQ of PECs on both soil organisms and aquatic species were insignificant (RQ less then 0.01), and HQs of contaminated water and soil ingestion were within acceptable limits. Nevertheless, meticulous toxicity studies are still required to confirm (or deny) the findings because endocrine disruption potency from mixtures of these classes of compounds cannot be ignored.Chitosan is a natural fiber, chemically cellulose-like biopolymer, which is processed from chitin. Its use as a natural polymer is getting more attention because it is non-toxic, renewable, and biocompatible. However, its poor mechanical and thermal strength, particle size, and surface area restrict its industrial use. Consequently, to improve these properties, cellulose and/or inorganic nanoparticles have been used. selleck compound This review discusses the recent progress of chitosan and cellulose composite materials, their preparation, and their applications in different industrial sectors. It also discusses the modification of chitosan and cellulose composite materials to allow their use on a large scale. Finally, the recent development of chitosan composite materials for drug delivery, food packaging, protective coatings, and wastewater treatment are discussed. The challenges and perspectives for future research are also considered. This review suggests that chitosan and cellulose nano-composite are promising, low-cost products for environmental remediation involving a simple production process.Membrane photosynthetic microbial fuel cell (MPMFC) utilizes O2, NO3- and NO2- as cathodic electron acceptors, enabling simultaneous treatment of nitrogen, CO2 and organic carbon in the cathode compartment. In this work, development of a novel cathodic process with in situ nitritation via microalgal photosynthesis during the light period is reported for achieving shortcut nitrogen removal (SNR) from ammonium-rich wastewater. Moreover, a tubular low-cost ceramic membrane was used to separate and recycle the microalgal-bacterial biomass to the cathode compartment during the continuous operation. The influence of NH4+ concentration and ratio of chemical oxygen demand to total nitrogen on the MPMFC performance was examined. Denitritation under dark and anoxic conditions occurred due to denitrifying bacteria (DNB) subsequent to nitritation under light and aerobic conditions by ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) in the consortia. Final concentrations of NH4+ and NO2- in the effluent of 0.10 mg NH4+-L-1 and 0.02 mg NO2--L-1, respectively, were obtained using MPMFC which resulted in a nitrogen removal efficiency of 99 ± 0.5%. The maximum electricity production achieved using the MPMFC was 56 ± 0.1 mA. This study demonstrated that combining microalgal photosynthesis, nitritation and denitritation in the cathode compartment of MPMFC is advantageous for avoiding the cost due to external aeration and organic carbon source necessary for ammonium removal as well as utilization of NO2- or NO3- as an electron acceptor.Untreated domestic wastewater and agricultural runoff are emerging as a potent cause of non-point source (NPS) pollutants which are a major threat to aquatic ecosystems. Periphyton biofilm-based technologies due to their high growth rate, energy efficiency and low input costs offer promising solutions for controlling nutrient pollution in agricultural systems. In this study we employed periphyton floway to treat NPS pollution from the agricultural watershed. The process performance of outdoor single pass algae floway (AFW) was evaluated. Steady state average biomass concentration of 11.73 g m-2 d-1 and removal rate of nitrogen 0.60 g m-2 d-1, phosphorus 0.27 g m-2d-1, arsenic 9.26 mg m-2 d-1, chromium 255.3 mg m-2 d-1 and lead 238.6 mg m-2 d-1 was achieved. In addition, the microalgae and their associated bacterial diversity and dynamics were analyzed. The results revealed a high diversity and rapid variations in the microbiome structure with diatom and cyanobacteria dominance combined with high N fixing and P solubilizing bacteria during most of the operational period.
