Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) causes reproductive inefficiencies and negatively impacts the economy of low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). It is characterized by a combination of syndromes that result in poor production performance and calf morbidity and mortality. BVDV control is possible by introduction of biosecurity measures, test-and-cull, and vaccination programs as accomplished in high-income countries. Knowledge of BVDV epidemiology is limited in many LMICs, which hinders implementation of effective control programs. We carried out a systematic review and meta-analysis to estimate the burden of BVDV, identify risk factors related to its occurrence, and health and economic impacts on production systems.

Relevant BVD articles were collated from library databases; 690 abstracts and full texts were found in an initial search followed by filtering of 59 manuscripts. We accounted for quality and risk of bias in the meta-analysis. Prevalence, exposure, and current infection at regional, producthe economic cost of BVDV in farming systems.

Because subclinical infections are common, the diagnosis of RVA-induced diarrhea cannot rely solely on molecular viral detection. However, RT-qPCR allows for quantification of RVA shedding in feces, which can be correlated with clinical disease. Here, we determine an optimal cutoff of rotaviral load quantified by RT-qPCR to predict RVA causality in diarrheic neonate calves, using RVA antigen-capture ELISA as reference test. Feces from 328 diarrheic (n = 175) and non-diarrheic (n = 153), less then 30-day-old dairy calves that had been tested by ELISA and tested positive by RT-qPCR were included. Of 82/328 (25.0%) ELISA-positive calves, 53/175 (30.3%) were diarrheic, whereas 124/153 (81.0%) non-diarrheic calves tested negative by ELISA. The median log10 viral load was significantly higher in diarrheic vs. non-diarrheic and ELISA-positive vs. -negative calves, indicating a higher viral load in diarrheic and ELISA-positive calves. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was conducted using the viral loads of the 175 diarrheic calves that had tested either positive (n = 53, cases) or negative (n = 122, controls) by ELISA. The optimal log10 viral load cutoff that predicted RVA causality in diarrheic calves was 9.171. A bootstrapping procedure was performed to assess the out-of-bag performance of this cutoff point, resulting in sensitivity = 0.812, specificity = 0.886, area under the curve = 0.922, and positive and negative diagnostic likelihood ratios of 11.184 and 0.142, respectively. The diagnostic accuracy of the cutoff was excellent to outstanding. This information will help in the interpretation of RVA RT-qPCR results in feces of diarrheic calves submitted for laboratory testing.Recently, fowl adenovirus (FAdV) infection has become widespread in poultry in China and may be asymptomatic or associated with clinical and other pathological conditions. In 2017, a severe egg drop syndrome outbreak in breeder ducks (45 weeks old) occurred in eastern Shandong province in China. The egg production rate declined from 93 to 41%, finally increasing to ~80% (did not reach complete recovery). The presence of the virus was confirmed by FAdV-5 specific PCR assay, and it was designated strain WHRS. Furthermore, next-generation and Sanger sequencing of genomic fragments yielded a 45,734 bp genome. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the genomic sequence of the WHRS strain was most homologous-(99.95%) to that of the FAdV-5 17/25,702 and 14/24,408 strain, sharing 32.1~53.4% similarity with other FAdV strains in the genus Aviadenovirus. Infected duck embryos died within 3-5 dpi, but no deaths occurred in the infected ducks. Strain WHRS could cause egg drop syndrome in ducks, accompanied by clinical signs similar to those of natural infections. Overall, strain WHRS is lethal to duck embryos and causes egg drop syndrome in breeder ducks.This study aimed to evaluate the clinical safety and validate the radiomitigative effect of KMRC011, against radiation-induced oral mucositis in beagle dogs. Clinical safety was evaluated by assessing tolerability, complete blood tests, and plasma biochemistry after drug administration. The radiomitigative effect of KMRC011 was evaluated macropathologically and histopathologically after inducing oral mucositis iatrogenically using 20 Gy irradiation. Decreased tolerability, increased neutrophil count, hepatic enzyme concentration, C-reactive protein concentration, and interleukin-6 concentration after the administration was observed and ceased within 24 h without additional treatment. Although all animals included in the present study developed severe mucositis in the late course of the study, animals administered KMRC011 showed less erythema, ulcer, inflammatory infiltration. This study investigated the relationship between orthopedic pain experienced at rest, and degree of movement asymmetry during trot in horses with induced reversible acute arthritis. Orthopedic pain was assessed with the Horse Grimace Scale (HGS), the Equine Utrecht University Scale of Facial Assessment of Pain (EQUUS-FAP), the Equine Pain Scale (EPS), and the Composite Orthopedic Pain Scale (CPS). Reliability and diagnostic accuracy were evaluated with intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) and area under the curve (AUC).

Eight healthy horses were included in this experimental study, with each horse acting as its own control.

Orthopedic pain was induced by intra-articular lipopolysaccharide (LPS) administration. Serial pain assessments were performed before induction and during pain progression and regression, where three observers independently and simultaneously assessed pain at rest with the four scales. Movement asymmetry was measured once before induction and a minimum of four times after inductn assessment during rest in subtly lame horses since movement asymmetry needs to be rather high before total pain score increase.
This study identified significant associations between pain experienced at rest and degree of movement asymmetry for all scales. Pain scores obtained using CPS were most closely associated with movement asymmetry. CPS was also the most accurate and reliable pain scale. All scales had varying linear and non-linear relations between total pain scores and movement asymmetry, illustrating challenges with orthopedic pain assessment during rest in subtly lame horses since movement asymmetry needs to be rather high before total pain score increase.The pharmacokinetic profiles and bioequivalence of two cyclosporine oral solutions were investigated in cats. Twenty-four cats were randomly allocated to two equally sized treatment groups in a randomized four-cycle, and dual-sequence cross-over design. Test and reference articles were orally administered in a single dose of 7 mg/kg Bodyweight. Serial blood samples were collected, and blood cyclosporine concentration was determined by ultra-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). No significant differences were present in the major pharmacokinetic parameters (Cmax, AUC0-last,) between the two formulations. The blood profiles of cyclosporine following the administration of both formulations were similar. The findings of the study suggested that the two articles were bioequivalent for cyclosporine oral solution.
