The band Toto was formed in the year 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also well-known studio musicians with Boz Scaggs at the time) and singer/bassist Bobby Kimball. In 1981 Toto's third album Turn Back was a complete failure However, they resurface with their fourth release Isolation that features two hits including the title track and Roseanna. The album and the tour helped them become a household name across the globe.

After a gap of couple of years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in 1986. It is a departure from the ballads of their previous albums and also includes some heavy rock. It was their first platinum album in North America.

During the recording of the band's fifth album the band loses their manager and is put in financial difficulty. They decide to change their name and create a new album with an entirely new producer. Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, takes over Fergie Frederiksen as the lead vocalist. Joseph is more natural as a frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a needed boost.

In 1999, the band released Mindfields and embarks on an extensive tour around the world. After a few weeks in Europe the band travels to Japan for sold-out shows. After Isolation, Toto took a break from the spotlight and went on hiatus. This gave every member of the band the opportunity to pursue their own solo projects. In 1996, the group reformed for a tour and album. It was the first time the original members took to the stage together in over 10 years.

The following year, Toto toured together with Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band. This was the last time that all of Toto's original members appeared performing at the same time. Following this, the group was again disbanded. Toto came back together for an event benefiting the ALS Foundation in 2010. to raise funds for the ALS Foundation. It was the first time in more than 31 year that all Toto's original members were on stage together. The original group was joined by keyboardist Greg Tambu who filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate who filled in for Shem von Schroeck.

Toto has remained one of the most loved rock bands for over three decades, having scored massive hits such as "Rosanna," "Hold The Line,"" and their 8X platinum smash, "Africa." With a range of influences, from progressive rock to world beats to jazz and soul, the group continues to delight fans with their acoustic arena rock.

The band suffered several setbacks during their later times, despite their fame. In 2002 the drummer Greg Phillinganes left the group and keyboardist David Paich took a leave of absence for health reasons. Drummer Shem von Schroeck took over however the group was not the same without Paich and Phillinganes. In 2008, a string of lineup changes as well as a series of disappointing albums led Toto to call it quits for a couple of years. But, the group recommenced touring in 2012 following the release of their album 40 Trips Around the Sun.

The album was a return to form for the group and the tour was accompanied it with sold-out shows across North America and Europe. Toto's reunion was helped by the inclusion of guitarist Steve Lukather and bassist Shem von Schroeck, who had both returned to the band.
