During this COVID-19 pandemic, Taiwan is one of the few countries where fecal immunochemical test and endoscopic activity for colorectal cancer screening keeps ongoing. We aimed to investigate how screening uptake and colonoscopy rate were affected in one of the biggest screening hubs in Northern Taiwan.

We conducted a prospective observational study tracing and analyzing the screening uptake and the trend of compliance to diagnostic colonoscopy in fecal immunochemical test-positive subjects in the National Taiwan University Hospital screening hub since the outbreak of COVID-19 and compared it with that of the corresponding periods in the past 3years. Cancellation and rescheduling rates of colonoscopy and related reasons were also explored.

Screening uptake during December 2019 to April 2020 was 88.8%, which was significantly lower than that in the corresponding period of the past 3years (91.2-92.7%, P for trend<0.0001). Colonoscopy rate in this period was 66.1%, which was also significantly lower than that in the past 3years (70.2-77.5%, P for trend=0.017). #link# Rescheduling or cancellation rate was up to 10.9%, which was significantly higher than that in the past 3years (P for trend=0.023), and half of them was due to the fear of being infected.

Fecal immunochemical test screening was significantly affected by COVID-19 pandemic. In order to resume the practice in COVID-19 era, screening organizers should consider various approaches to secure timely diagnosis of colorectal cancer.

Recently, lenvatinib demonstrated non-inferiority to sorafenib in terms of overall survival (OS) in a randomized phase III study that was conducted at 154 sites in 20 countries. Here, we investigated treatment outcomes and safety of lenvatinib compared with sorafenib and identified independent predictors of poor outcomes, including shorter progression-free survival (PFS) and OS in Korean patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

Patients with advanced HCC treated with lenvatinib or sorafenib at Yonsei Liver Center, Severance Hospital, Yonsei University College of Medicine between October 2018 to October 2019 were considered eligible. Response evaluation was performed according to the modified Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors.

The lenvatinib arm had a significantly lower proportion of patients who received prior anti-HCC treatments (47.7% vs 78.7%; P<0.001) than those in the sorafenib arm. Univariate analysis showed that ECOG 1 (vs 0), serum albumin, alpha-fetoprotein (AFPms of OS.
Previous studies have demonstrated the possibility of adverse effects of prolonged wearing of personal protective equipment in healthcare workers. However, there are a few studies about the effects on skin characteristics after wearing a mask for non-healthcare workers. In this study, we evaluated the dermatologic effects of wearing a mask on the skin over time.

Twenty-one healthy men and women participated in the study. All participants wore masks for 6hours consecutively. Three measurements were taken (a) before wearing the mask, (b) after wearing the mask for 1hour, and (c) after wearing the mask for 6hours. Skin temperature, skin redness, sebum secretion, skin hydration, trans-epidermal water loss, and skin elasticity were measured.

The skin temperature, redness, hydration, and sebum secretion were changed significantly after 1 and 6hours of wearing a mask. Skin temperature, redness, and hydration showed significant differences between the mask-wearing area and the non-mask-wearing area.

Mask-wearing conditions and time can change several skin characteristics. In particular, it is revealed that the perioral area could be most affected.

It represents a wide range of chronic liver diseases in patients with no history of significant alcohol consumption, starting with simple steatosis and progressing towards non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, cirrhosis, and ultimately hepatocellular carcinoma. NAFLD is usually associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, metabolic syndrome, and obesity. This disease has mostly been studied in obese individuals; however, it has been widely reported and studied among the lean/non-obese population in recent years. The pathogenesis of NAFLD in non-obese patients is associated with various genetic predispositions, particularly a patatin-like phospholipase domain-containing protein 3 G allele polymorphism, which results in the accumulation of triglyceride in the liver and resistance to insulin. Additionally, dietary factors such as high fructose consumption seem to play a substantial role in the pathology of non-obese NAFLD. Although there is not enough evidence on the treatment of NAFLD in non-obese patients, the standard approach is to advise altering one's lifestyle in order to diminish visceral adiposity. Dietary modification, weight loss, and increased physical activity are highly recommended. We aimed to review and summarize the existing information on the prevalence, pathogenesis, genetic predispositions, diagnosis, and treatment of NAFLD in non-obese patients according to the latest literature.
We aimed to investigate the effects of Korean red ginseng (KRG) supplementation on gray matter volume of the human brain which could be related to cognitive enhancing effects of KRG.

In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 51 healthy individuals were assigned to receive either KRG (1000 mg/day, n = 26) or placebo (n = 25) for 8 weeks. Gray matter volume of the whole brain was measured using voxel-based morphometry based on high-resolution T1-weighted magnetic resonance images acquired at baseline and week 8. The standardized composite cognitive scores of executive function, attention, and memory were also evaluated at baseline and week 8. Changes in gray matter volume as well as the composite cognitive scores were compared between the KRG and placebo groups.

Following 8 weeks of KRG supplementation, the gray matter volume of the left parahippocampal gyrus increased significantly in the KRG group, relative to the placebo group (p for interaction < 0.001). The KRG group also showed greater magnitude of enhancement in the composite cognitive scores relative to the placebo group (p for interaction = 0.03).

Gray matter volume increase in the parahippocampus may be a key neural change as induced by KRG supplementation, which could be associated with cognitive enhancement.

Here, we report asymmetric synthesis of derivatives of (S)-α-(octyl)glycine ((S)-2-aminodecanoic acid) and its N-Fmoc derivative via alkylation of chiral nucleophilic glycine equivalent with n-octyl bromide. Under the optimized conditions, the alkylation proceeds with excellent yield (98.1%) and diastereoselectivity (98.8% de). The observed stereochemical outcome and convenient reaction conditions bode well for application of this method for large-scale asymmetric synthesis of (S)-2-aminodecanoic acid and its derivatives.Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the skin and the eyes. The pathogenesis of rosacea is complex and includes the interaction between genetic and environmental factors, dysregulation of the innate immune system, neurovascular modifications and the interaction with skin commensals. Clinical manifestations in children include the telangiectatic form, papulopustular rosacea, ocular rosacea, periorificial dermatitis, granulomatous rosacea and idiopathic facial aseptic granuloma. Management is aimed at identifying and avoiding triggers. Topical therapy is used for mild cases with topical antibiotics and anti-inflammatory agents. link2 Oral agents are indicated, in combination with topical therapy, for moderate to severe cases. Prolonged therapy may be required.Glioblastoma is a highly aggressive brain malignancy commonly refractory to classical and novel chemo-, radio- and immunotherapies, with median survival times of ~15 months following diagnosis. Poor immunological responses exemplified by the downregulation of T-cell activity, and upregulation of immunosuppressive cells within the tumor microenvironment have limited the effectiveness of immunotherapy in glioblastoma to date. Here we show that glioblastoma cells express a large repertoire of inhibitory checkpoint ligands known to control effector T cell responses. Furthermore, flow cytometry analysis reveals that glioblastoma cells with an enhanced stem cell-like phenotype express several investigated ligands at significant levels on their cell surface. This reveals that glioblastoma stem-like cells express suppressive ligands with the potential of suppressing major T cell checkpoint receptors. With this information, it is now essential that we understand the relevance of this extensive repertoire of immune checkpoint ligands and their functional consequence on immune evasion in glioblastoma. This is necessary to develop effective immunotherapeutics and to be able to match treatment to patient, especially in the light of CheckMate 143.
The sudden and extensive outbreak of coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) has overshadowed another developing viral threat the Zika flavivirus. Of particular concern is that pregnant women can pass Zika virus to the foetus, and there is a strong implication of an association between Zika virus infection and foetal microcephaly. link3 Currently, there is no vaccine, and there is no cure.

Published literature and Internet sources were searched for information related to Zika virus, its transmission, its clinical presentation and sequalae, prevention and implications (practice and regulatory) for healthcare providers. The identified English sources were reviewed, assessed and synthesized. Emphasis was placed on providing an overview of the problem, and identification of unmet needs and future directions.

Zika virus poses a major challenge for healthcare providers, particularly in areas unaccustomed to it, since it is transmitted to humans by the vector Aedes aegypti mosquito. The outbreak impacts every healthcare provider, s developed or effective treatment for Zika virus is discovered, healthcare providers must be AVP (aware, vigilant and proactive) in order to lessen the spread and impact of the implicated devastating birth defects (microcephaly) and other neurological disorders (eg Guillain-Barré Syndrome) of this infection. Unfortunately, many knowledge gaps exist. There is an urgent need for a reliable, inexpensive diagnostic test, an effective treatment and an approved and readily available vaccine.
