Identification of the Listeria species is important for the protection of public health and the food industry. This study aimed to examine artisanal cheeses for the presence of L. monocytogenes and the effectiveness of the MALDI-TOF MS method in the identification of the L. monocytogenes isolates. A total of 370 samples of artisanal cheeses were examined. L. monocytogenes was found in 23 cheese samples (6.2%). The reliability of L. monocytogenes identification achieved by MALDI-TOF MS was varied, and the vast majority of the isolates (27/32) were identified only to the secure genus, probable species level. This study showed that (i) the occurrence of L. monocytogenes in the artisanal cheeses was at a higher level than that in the other EU countries, (ii) the standard of species identification of L. monocytogenes isolates from artisanal cheeses achieved by MALDI-TOF MS was not satisfactory and (iii) the presence of L. monocytogenes in artisanal cheeses remains a problem with regard to the food safety criterion and a potential public health risk.Currently, kidney transplantation is widely accepted as the renal replacement therapy allowing for the best quality of life and longest survival of patients developing end-stage renal disease. However, chronic transplant rejection, recurrence of previous kidney disease or newly acquired conditions, or immunosuppressive drug toxicity often lead to a deterioration of kidney allograft function over time. Complement components play an important role in the pathogenesis of kidney allograft impairment. Most studies on the role of complement in kidney graft function focus on humoral rejection; however, complement has also been associated with cell mediated rejection, post-transplant thrombotic microangiopathy, the recurrence of several glomerulopathies in the transplanted kidney, and transplant tolerance. Better understanding of the complement involvement in the transplanted kidney damage has led to the development of novel therapies that inhibit complement components and improve graft survival. The analysis of functional complotypes, based on the genotype of both graft recipient and donor, may become a valuable tool for assessing the risk of acute transplant rejection. The review summarizes current knowledge on the pathomechanisms of complement activation following kidney transplantation and the resulting diagnostic and therapeutic possibilities.Columnea latent viroid (CLVd) is a member of the Pospiviroid family and its naked circular RNA genome typically forms native "rod-like" secondary structures. In this work, the CLVd taxonomy was reevaluated based on sequence similarity and phylogenetic analysis, as well as the evaluation of the symptom development and disease severity of four selected CLVd isolates in a range of host species. The phylogenetic analysis showed that all CLVd isolates were clustered into five distinct clades (I) severe isolates originally found in tomato crops in Thailand, (II) ornamental isolates, (III) mild isolates originally found in tomato crops in Thailand, and two clades (IV and V) containing mild isolates originating mainly from tomato crops in European countries, with different virulence levels on several hosts. Our analysis demonstrated that some CLVd isolates have a sequence similarity of less than 90% within the species taxon, as well as distinct biological characteristics (symptom development and virulence), both of which are important ICTV criteria for viroid classification. For these reasons, we propose that CLVd should be re-classified into at least three main taxonomic lineages a "CLVd-tomato Asian lineage" (I), a "CLVd-tomato European lineage" (IV) and a "CLVd-ornamental European lineage" (II), plus two minor lineages (III and V), fitting the ICTV criteria.Anion binding and extraction from solutions is currently a dynamic research topic in the field of supramolecular chemistry. A particularly challenging task is the extraction of anions with large hydration energies, such as the carbonate ion. Carbonate-binding complexes are also receiving increased interest due to their relevance to atmospheric CO2 fixation. Nanojars are a class of self-assembled, supramolecular coordination complexes that have been shown to bind highly hydrophilic anions and to extract even the most hydrophilic ones, including carbonate, from water into aliphatic solvents. Here we present an expanded nanojar that is able to bind two carbonate ions, thus doubling the previously reported carbonate-binding capacity of nanojars. The new nanojar is characterized by detailed single-crystal X-ray crystallographic studies in the solid state and electrospray ionization mass spectrometric (including tandem MS/MS) studies in solution.Total pancreatectomy with islet autotransplantation (TPIAT) is a surgical procedure for patients with chronic pancreatitis and poor quality of life.
