Logistic regression analysis was used to assess the risk of hyperuricemia, hypertension, mixed hyperlipidemia, and metabolic syndrome from a high AIP. Metabolic parameters and AIP had a significant correlation, with higher rates observed with increased AIP. As a set, metabolic parameters increased with an AIP >0.21 (λ Wilks = 0.58, F(14,344) = 7.7, P  less then  0.0001). The area under the curve was statistically significant for prediction of hyperuricemia (0.6), mixed hyperlipidemia (0.9), hypertension (0.8), and metabolic syndrome (0.95). In conclusion, in a sample of young Mexican adults, AIP was strongly associated with cardiovascular risk factors and could serve as a useful marker for the prediction of metabolic alterations related to cardiovascular disease.This study investigated the association between hematologic inflammatory markers derived from complete blood counts and obesity. We undertook a cross-sectional study that included self-reported healthy subjects above the age of 18 years from the 2011-2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, a US population database. Study parameters included mean corpuscular volume, red cell distribution width, mean platelet volume, total platelet count, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio, and systemic immune-inflammation index. Body mass index was used as an index of obesity and was correlated with each hematologic inflammatory marker. Our analysis found a statistically significant association between each inflammatory parameter and higher body mass indices. We demonstrated an association between complete blood count-derived indices of inflammation and obesity, and these results provide the basis for future studies using complete blood count-derived variables and outcomes in patients with some chronic diseases.Depression and anxiety in patients with heart disease and/or cancer have been shown to affect quality of life, adherence with medical management, and prognosis. link2 We investigated the association of the diagnoses of cancer, heart disease, or both with self-reported symptoms consistent with serious mental illness (SMI). We used the K6 score to identify self-reported symptoms consistent with SMI from patients' responses to the 2017 National Health Interview Survey. Our final cohort included 24,777 individual surveys. Of those respondents, 1509 reported cancer, 2639 reported heart disease, and 534 reported both. About 96% of patients reported a K6 score less then 13, and 4% reported a K6 score ≥13, which is suggestive of SMI. Logistic regression identified significant associations between SMI and an inability to afford mental care/counseling, an inability to afford prescribed medications, and unemployed status, with odds ratios of 6.97, 2.94, and 3.49, respectively. Having both heart disease and cancer was independently associated with SMI (odds ratio = 2.57; 95% confidence interval, 1.53-4.31; P less then 0.001). In conclusion, in a nationally representative self-reported questionnaire, patients with a combined diagnosis of cancer and heart disease were significantly more likely to report SMI than those with either diagnosis alone.Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols are gaining wide acceptance. We evaluated ERAS protocol implementation in transfemoral transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) patients. The ERAS protocol included (1) moderate sedation or general anesthesia with on-table extubation, (2) no pulmonary artery or urinary catheters, (3) arterial line removal within 4 hours, (4) no postoperative narcotics, (5) mobilization at 4 hours and ambulation within 8 hours, and (6) antihypertensive reinstitution without nodal blockers. Patients who received TAVR before and after ERAS implementation were compared (N = 121 and N = 368, respectively). The primary endpoint was total hospital length of stay (LOS). ERAS patients had a lower mean Society of Thoracic Surgeons predicted risk of mortality (6.7% vs 7.5%; P = 0.04). Unadjusted analysis demonstrated that ERAS was associated with significantly decreased mean LOS (2.8 vs 4.0 days, P  less then  0.001), decreased 30-day mortality (0.8% vs 5.0%; P = 0.003), and increased discharge home (90.2% vs 79.3%, P = 0.002) with no increase in 30-day readmission (11.1% vs 14.0%, P = 0.39). After risk adjustment, ERAS patients had a 1.87-day shorter LOS (P = 0.001) and trended toward increased discharge home (odds ratio 1.76, P = 0.078) without increased readmission (odds ratio 0.74, P = 0.4). An ERAS protocol for TAVR is safe and is associated with shorter LOS without increased readmission.Colloidal copper(I) sulfide (Cu2-x S) nanocrystals (NCs) have attracted much attention for a wide range of applications because of their unique optoelectronic properties, driving scientists to explore the potential of using Cu2-x S NCs as seeds in the synthesis of heteronanocrystals to achieve new multifunctional materials. Herein, we developed a multistep synthesis strategy toward Cu2-x S/ZnS heteronanorods. The Janus-type Cu2-x S/ZnS heteronanorods are obtained by the injection of hexagonal high-chalcocite Cu2-x S seed NCs in a hot zinc oleate solution in the presence of suitable surfactants, 20 s after the injection of sulfur precursors. The Cu2-x S seed NCs undergo rapid aggregation and coalescence in the first few seconds after the injection, forming larger NCs that act as the effective seeds for heteronucleation and growth of ZnS. The ZnS heteronucleation occurs on a single (100) facet of the Cu2-x S seed NCs and is followed by fast anisotropic growth along a direction that is perpendicular to the c-axis, thus leading to Cu2-x S/ZnS Janus-type heteronanorods with a sharp heterointerface. Interestingly, the high-chalcocite crystal structure of the injected Cu2-x S seed NCs is preserved in the Cu2-x S segments of the heteronanorods because of the high-thermodynamic stability of this Cu2-x S phase. The Cu2-x S/ZnS heteronanorods are subsequently converted into single-component Cu2-x S and CuInS2 nanorods by postsynthetic topotactic cation exchange. This work expands the possibilities for the rational synthesis of colloidal multicomponent heteronanorods by allowing the design principles of postsynthetic heteroepitaxial seeded growth and nanoscale cation exchange to be combined, yielding access to a plethora of multicomponent heteronanorods with diameters in the quantum confinement regime.In this article, which is part of the Symposium on the Tenth Anniversary of the 2010 Horizontal Merger Guidelines, we suggest a number of improvements that should be considered in the next revision of the Guidelines. Our analysis is based on the observation that horizontal merger policy has suffered from under-enforcement. We provide evidence that the enforcement agencies face significant resource constraints that require a triage process that inevitably leads to under-enforcement. link3 In light of merger law placing greater weight on avoiding false negatives and under-deterrence than false positive and over-deterrence, the article suggests a number of ways in which the under-enforcement bias might be corrected, including (among others) rolling back the increase in the HHI "red zone" thresholds; mandating anticompetitive presumptions for mergers with high GUPPIs, acquisitions of mavericks, and acquisitions by dominant firms; closer analysis of common ownership by financial funds; and expanded analysis of potential competition mergers.
While spirituality and parenting have been examined among caregivers experiencing adversity, less research has explored these factors among mother survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV). Given the potentially protective role of spirituality, understanding how parenting is associated with spirituality is important.

The current study explored parenting practices, parent-child communication, and spirituality among 175 women caregivers who had experienced recent IPV. Hierarchical linear regression was used to examine associations between maternal age, education, HIV status, and illicit substance use (model 1); child age and gender (model 2); parent-child comfort communicating about sexual practices, IPV, HIV/AIDS, and substance use (model 3); and positive and negative parenting practices (model 4) with spirituality.

Findings suggested positive parenting practices, greater comfort talking about IPV, and greater discomfort talking about substance use were associated with higher spirituality.

The present study investigated the cognitive mechanisms underlying default language selection. In three experiments, Spanish-English bilinguals named pictures out of context, or read aloud sentences with a single word replaced by a picture with a cognate (e.g., lemon-limón) or noncognate name (e.g., table-mesa). Cognates speeded naming and significantly reduced switching costs. Critically, cognate effects were not modulated by sentence context. However, switch costs were larger in sentence context, which also exhibited significant language dominance effects, asymmetrical switch costs, and asymmetrical cognate facilitation effects, which were absent or symmetrical respectively in bare picture naming. These results suggest that default-language selection is driven primarily by boosting activation of the default language, not by proactive inhibition of the nondefault language. However, relaxation of proactive control in production of connected speech leads to greater reliance on reactive control to produce language switches relative to out-of-context naming, a contextually driven dynamic tradeoff in language control mechanisms.Epidemiological analyses of airborne allergenic pollen often use concentration measurements from a single station to represent exposure across a city, but this approach does not account for the spatial variation of concentrations within the city. Because there are few descriptions of urban-scale variation, the resulting exposure measurement error is unknown but potentially important for epidemiological studies. This study examines urban scale variation in pollen concentrations by measuring pollen concentrations of 13 taxa over 24-hr periods twice weekly at 25 sites in two seasons in Detroit, Michigan. Spatio-temporal variation is described using cumulative distribution functions and regression models. Daily pollen concentrations across the 25 stations varied considerably, and the average quartile coefficient of dispersion was 0.63. Measurements at a single site explained 3-85% of the variation at other sites, depending on the taxon, and 95% prediction intervals of pollen concentrations generally spanned one to two orders of magnitude.
