Ion beams used for radiotherapy exhibit an increased relative biological effectiveness (RBE), which depends on several physical treatment parameters as well as on biological factors of the irradiated tissues. While the RBE is an experimentally well-defined quantity, translation to patients is complex and requires radiobiological studies, dedicated models to calculate the RBE in treatment planning as well as strategies for dose prescription. Preclinical in vivo studies and analysis of clinical outcome are important to validate and refine RBE-models. This review describes the concept of the experimental and clinical RBE and explains the fundamental dependencies of the RBE based on in vitro experiments. The available preclinical in vivo studies on normal tissue and tumor RBE for ions heavier than protons are reviewed in the context of the historical and present development of ion beam radiotherapy. In addition, the role of in vivo RBE-values in the development and benchmarking of RBE-models as well as the transition of these models to clinical application are described. Finally, limitations in the translation of experimental RBE-values into clinical application and the direction of future research are discussed.
The role of intrauterine infection in the development of neonatal pulmonary disease is unclear and the impact of histological chorioamnionitis (HCAM) on respiratory outcomes in preterm infants remains controversial. The aim of this study was to explore the association between HCAM and neonatal respiratory outcomes in very-low-birth-weight (VLBW) preterm infants and evaluate the stepwise difference in the stage and severity of HCAM among neonatal respiratory outcomes.

We retrospectively enrolled 129 VLBW preterm infants with placenta histopathology examinations in this study. HCAM was subdivided into 3 stages (early, intermediate, and advanced) according to the progression of the maternal inflammatory response. selleckchem The perinatal characteristics, placental histopathology, and neonatal morbidities, including respiratory outcomes (respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), Wilson-Mikity syndrome (WMS) and bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD)), were collected for comparison.

A total of 52.7% (68/129) of the infants had HCct from RDS in preterm neonates. Additionally, VLBW neonates with intermediate to advanced-stage HCAM are at risk for WMS.
Despite the frequency of acute appendicitis in children, there is no evidence-based consensus surrounding the urgency of the operation if a diagnosis is made after regular business hours. Although a modest delay in time to operation does not increase disease severity, postponing cases to the next calendar day may be associated with higher resource utilization. We aimed to evaluate the trend of delaying appendectomies to the next calendar day and its associated outcomes.

We queried the Pediatric Health Information System to analyze appendectomy patients younger than 18 y of age from 2010 to 2018. Same-day appendectomy and next-day appendectomy cohorts were created using admission hour and operative day. Healthcare cost, length of stay, surgical complications, and 30-day readmission rates were collected. Bivariate analyses and multivariable regressions were used to evaluate groups stratified by time of presentation.

During the study period, 113,662 appendectomies were performed, comprising 88,715 (78.1%) ent to the next calendar day is associated with higher resource utilization.Dopamine (DA) neurons of the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) were traditionally viewed as an extension of the ventral tegmental area (VTA) DA population. While the VTA DA population is known to play important roles in reward processing, emerging evidence now supports the view that DRN DA neurons are a specialized midbrain DA subsystem that performs distinct functions in parallel to the VTA DA population. Recent studies have shed new light on the roles of DRN DA neurons in encoding incentive salience and in regulating memory expression and arousal. Here, we review recent findings using mouse models about the physiology and behavioral functions of DRN DA neurons, highlight the engagement of DRN DA neurons and their upstream circuits in opioid addiction, and discuss emerging lines of investigation that reveal multifaceted heterogeneity among DRN DA neurons. The article describes the preparation and characterization of binary mixtures of two antiandrogens used in prostate cancer treatment, i.e. flutamide (FL) and bicalutamide (BIC), as well as their ternary mixtures with either poly(methyl methacrylate-co-ethyl acrylate) (MMA/EA) or polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). The samples were converted into amorphous form to improve their water solubility and dissolution rate. Broadband dielectric spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry revealed that FL-BIC (65%) (w/w) does not tend to crystallize from the supercooled liquid state. We made the assumption that the drug-to-drug weight ratio should be maintained as in the case of monotherapy so we decided to investigate the system containing FL and BIC in 151 (w/w) ratio with 30% additive of polymers as stabilizers. Our research has shown that only in the case of the FL-BIC-PVP mixture the crystallization has been completely inhibited, both in glassy and supercooled liquid state, which was confirmed by X-ray diffraction studies. In addition, we performed solubility and dissolution rate tests, which showed a significant improvement in solubility of ternary system as compared to its crystalline counterpart. Enhanced physical stability and water solubility of the amorphous ternary system makes it promising for further studies.Preverbal infants are particularly good at discriminating syllables that differ by a single phoneme but do they perceive syllables as a whole unit or can they become aware of the underlying phonemes if their attention is attracted to the relevant level of analysis? We trained 3-month-old infants to pair two consonants, co-articulated with different vowels, with two visual shapes. Using event-related potentials, we showed that infants generalize the learned associations to new syllables with respect to the training phase. The systematic pairing of a visual label with a phonetic category is rapidly learned in a few trials, suggesting that phonemes are natural categories for infants but also that phonetic representations are accessible to internal operations outside the linguistic system. Hence, the possibility of an explicit access to the phonetic level, which is the main process underlying alphabetic reading system, is grounded in the early faculties of the human infant.
