While Bisphenol A (BPA) has been a requisite plastic additive, as an endocrine disruptor it has been associated with adverse health effects including ovarian disorders. Following implemented restrictions on BPA usage, it is replaced by alternative bisphenols, biological effects of which have not been adequately investigated. Our study examined effects of bisphenols AF (BPAF) and S (BPS), on the human ovarian granulosa cell line COV434, and compared them with BPA, with the focus on cell viability (10-9-10-4 M) and angiogenesis-related factors (10-9-10-5 M), relevant for both the follicle development and ovarian pathologies vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A), platelet-derived growth factor AA (PDGF-AA), and matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9). Each bisphenol impaired cell viability and increased generation of intracellular reactive oxygen species at the highest concentration (10-4 M). While VEGF-A production in BPAF-treated groups did not differ from the control, all doses of BPS and BPA caused a marked reduction in VEGF-A output. Nevertheless, the alterations in VEGF-A production were not caused by the impact on VEGFA gene expression since there were no indications of VEGFA downregulation in the presence of either BPS or BPA. Interestingly, we observed a similar pattern of PDGF-AA output reduction in BPS- and BPA-treated groups to that of VEGF-A production. BPAF and BPS (10-5 M) increased MMP9 expression, however, this effect was not reflected by the increase in MMP-9 production. The results obtained demonstrate that the novel bisphenol analogs are not inert with respect to the ovarian cells, and their effects might contribute to dysregulation of granulosa cells functions.An increasing body of literature has demonstrated that armed conflicts and military activity may contribute to environmental pollution with metals, although the existing data are inconsistent. Therefore, in this paper, we discuss potential sources of military-related metal emissions, environmental metal contamination, as well as routes of metal exposure and their health hazards in relation to military activities. Emission of metals into the environment upon military activity occurs from weapon residues containing high levels of particles containing lead (Pb; leaded ammunition), copper (Cu; unleaded), and depleted uranium (DU). As a consequence, military activity results in soil contamination with Pb and Cu, as well as other metals including Cd, Sb, Cr, Ni, Zn, with subsequent metal translocation to water, thus increasing the risk of human exposure. Biomonitoring studies have demonstrated increased accumulation of metals in plants, invertebrates, and vertebrate species (fish, birds, mammals). Correspondingly, characterize military-related metal exposures and their underlying mechanisms of their adverse toxic effects.

O use remained and new approaches for dose response modelling have been adopted, calling for an update and re-evaluation of the body of evidence. This review aims to assess available animal evidence on N
O reproductive and developmental outcomes to inform a health-based recommended occupational exposure limit (OEL) for N
O with a benchmark dose-response model used to derive a health-based OEL recommendation of 20 mg/m3 as 8-h time-weighted average.Many studies have proposed a relationship between COVID-19 transmissibility and ambient pollution levels. However, a major limitation in establishing such associations is to adequately account for complex disease dynamics, influenced by e.g. significant differences in control measures and testing policies. Another difficulty is appropriately controlling the effects of other potentially important factors, due to both their mutual correlations and a limited dataset. To overcome these difficulties, we will here use the basic reproduction number (R0) that we estimate for USA states using non-linear dynamics methods. To account for a large number of predictors (many of which are mutually strongly correlated), combined with a limited dataset, we employ machine-learning methods. Specifically, to reduce dimensionality without complicating the variable interpretation, we employ Principal Component Analysis on subsets of mutually related (and correlated) predictors. Methods that allow feature (predictor) selection, and ranking their importance, are then used, including both linear regressions with regularization and feature selection (Lasso and Elastic Net) and non-parametric methods based on ensembles of weak-learners (Random Forest and Gradient Boost). Through these substantially different approaches, we robustly obtain that PM2.5 is a major predictor of R0 in USA states, with corrections from factors such as other pollutants, prosperity measures, population density, chronic disease levels, and possibly racial composition. As a rough magnitude estimate, we obtain that a relative change in R0, with variations in pollution levels observed in the USA, is typically ~30%, which further underscores the importance of pollution in COVID-19 transmissibility.There are many reservoirs, ponds and lakes in the Meriç-Ergene River Basin (Turkey), which is an intensive agricultural region. Since agrochemicals are extensively applied to the agricultural soils in the basin, these water bodies may be contaminated with toxic metal (loid)s (TMs). However, no study has been conducted to determine TM levels in the water bodies. In this study, levels of seven TMs (Cr, As, Cu, N, Zn, Cd and Pb) in surface water samples taken from 25 different stagnant water bodies (11 reservoirs, 12 ponds and 2 lakes) in the dry and wet seasons were measured and compared with water quality guidelines. In addition, spatial and seasonal variations, health risks, pollution status and possible sources of TMs were assessed. The mean As concentration of the lakes was significantly higher due to drainage water from paddy fields. The ponds had higher total mean TM concentration likely due to their low water volume. Surface runoff from rainfall caused the Cr, Zn, Cd, Pb and Cu concentrations to increase in the wet season. Only the mean As concentration of the lakes in the dry season was above the drinking water standards. Metal pollution indices showed low contamination of the water bodies in both seasons. Health risk indices indicated that As in the lakes in the dry season via ingestion exposure pathway may pose both non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks to the residents. The results of factor and correlation analyses showed that among the studied TMs, only As originated from anthropogenic sources. The findings of this study revealed that agricultural activities caused As pollution in the lakes, while the reservoirs and ponds were not significantly affected by agricultural activities. We suggest that the levels of TMs in all water bodies should be measured at regular intervals to check the quality of surface water.
Organophosphate insecticides and the herbicide, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) are used to protect crops or control weeds. Pyrethroids are used to manage pests both in agriculture and in residences, and to reduce the transmission of insect-borne diseases. Several studies have reported inverse associations between exposure to organophosphates (as a larger class) and birth outcomes but these associations have not been conclusive for pyrethroids or 2,4-D, specifically. We aimed to investigate the association between birth outcomes and urinary biomarkers of pyrethroids, organophosphates and 2,4-D among healthy pregnant women living in New York City.

We quantified urinary biomarkers of 2,4-D and of organophosphate and pyrethroid insecticides from 269 women from two cohorts a) Thyroid Disruption And Infant Development (TDID) and b) Sibling/Hermanos cohort (S/H). We used weighted quantile sum regression and multivariable linear regression models to evaluate the associations between a mixture of urinary cels with individual pesticides, concentrations of TCPy were inversely associated with head circumference in boys and higher concentrations of 2,4-D was inversely associated with head circumference among girls; 2,4-D concentrations were also associated with higher birth length among boys. Concentrations of 3-PBA was positively associated with head circumference among boys.Ozone (O3)-induced metabolic changes in leaves are relevant and may have several ecological significances. Here, variations in foliar chemistry of two poplar clones (Populus deltoides × maximowiczii, Eridano, and P. × euramericana, I-214) under a chronic O3 treatment (80 ppb, 5 h d-1 for 10 consecutive days) were investigated. The aim was to elucidate if leaf age and/or O3-sensitivity (considering Eridano and I-214 as O3-sensitive and O3-resistant, respectively) can affect suitability of poplar foliage for Chrysomela populi L. This study highlights that realistic O3 concentrations can significantly impact the host/insect interactions, a phenomenon dependent on leaf age and O3-sensitivity of the host.The heatwave is a disastrous hazard having significant impacts on health and society. Whereas IMD temperature data used for hazard assessment for the present scenario (1958-2005) while projected temperature data from regional earth system model REMO-OASIS-MPIOM (ROM) were used for the future (2006-2099) scenario. The study exhibited the most hazardous, vulnerable, and risk-prone regions identified as the south-eastern coast and Indo-Gangetic plains and some populous districts with metropolitan regions (Mumbai, Delhi, and Kolkata) under the current scenario. The coupled model ROM has efficiently captured the critical districts with higher and lower risk, showing its future projection capability.
