Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album, was a return to a classic sextet format and a more consistent, stronger effort with a harder edge. The more experimental sound of Turn Back reflected the maturation in the group. The drummer Bobby Kimball's increasing virtuosity was reflected by the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. Keyboardist David Paich's work was more precise, sharper and less cloned previously recorded efforts.

After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live show in Amsterdam which was released as a set of two CDs titled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. A new studio album followed shortly after, and the band embarked on a long-distance tour to promote the album. During this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started looking through old demos and tapes in search of a new album featuring songs that were never recorded before. It was completed in 2001 as a double album called Then and Now. It was the band's first album without one single track titled "A". The album also included a previously unreleased track called "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New was not a commercial success and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis that restricted his singing capabilities.
