Recent studies have investigated dogs with presumed diet-associated dilated cardiomyopathy (daDCM), but prospective studies of multiple breeds are needed.
To evaluate baseline features and serial changes in echocardiography and cardiac biomarkers in dogs with DCM eating nontraditional diets (NTDs) or traditional diets (TDs), and in dogs with subclinical cardiac abnormalities (SCA) eating NTD.
Sixty dogs with DCM (NTD, n=51; TDs, n=9) and 16 dogs with SCA eating NTDs.
Echocardiography, electrocardiography, and measurement of taurine, cardiac troponin I, and N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide were performed in dogs with DCM or SCA. Diets were changed for all dogs, taurine was supplemented in most, and echocardiography and cardiac biomarkers were reassessed (3, 6, and 9months).
At enrollment, there were few differences between dogs with DCM eating NTDs or TDs; none had low plasma or whole blood taurine concentrations. Improvement in fractional shortening over time was significantly associated with previous consumption of a NTD, even after adjustment for other variables (P=.005). Median survival time for dogs with DCM was 611 days (range, 2-940 days) for the NTD group and 161 days (range, 12-669 days) for the TD group (P=.21). Sudden death was the most common cause of death in both diet groups. Dogs with SCA also had significant echocardiographic improvements over time.
Dogs with DCM or SCA previously eating NTDs had small, yet significant improvements in echocardiographic parameters after diet changes.

Identification of effective and accurate prognostic biomarkers for hepatitis B virus-associated decompensated cirrhosis (HBV-DeCi) is challenging. This study was designed to determine and compare the prognostic value of albumin-related ratios (blood urea nitrogen-to-albumin ratio [BAR], C-reactive protein-to-albumin ratio [CAR], prothrombin time-international normalized ratio-to-albumin ratio [PTAR], neutrophil count-to-albumin ratio [NAR], and D-dimer-to-albumin ratio [DAR]) in HBV-DeCi patients.
We retrospectively recruited 161 HBV-DeCi patients. Receiver operating characteristic curve, DeLong test, and Cox regression analyses were used to estimate and compare the predictive value of these five albumin-related ratios and Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) score.
A total of 29 (18.0%) patients had died 30days after admission. The prognostic roles of CAR, DAR, PTAR, NAR, and BAR in HBV-DeCi were different. CAR, PTAR, NAR, and BAR were significantly higher in non-survivors compared with survivors. However, DAR did not differ between the two groups. The predictive power of BAR was superior to that of the other four albumin-related biomarkers and similar to that of MELD score. On multivariate analysis, BAR and MELD score were identified as independent prognostic factors, and the combination of BAR and MELD score may improve the prognostic accuracy in HBV-DeCi.
The present findings suggest that BAR may be a simple and useful prognostic tool to predict mortality in HBV-DeCi patients.

RNA-binding protein fused in sarcoma (FUS) is a well-studied IDP that induces LLPS since its low-complexity core region (FUS-LC-core) is essential for droplet formation through contacts between FUS-LC-cores. Several experimental studies have reported that adenosine triphosphate (ATP) concentrations modulate LLPS-driven droplet formation through the dissolution of FUS. To elucidate the role of ATP in this dissolution, microsecond-order all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were performed for a crowded system of FUS-LC-cores in the presence of multiple ATP molecules. Our analysis revealed that the adenine group of ATP frequently contacted the FUS-LC-core, and the phosphoric acid group of ATP was exposed to the external solvent, which promoted both hydration and solubilization of FUS.Pacemaker-associated superior vena cava (SVC) syndrome is increasingly recognized as a nonmalignant type of SVC syndrome. Computed tomographic (CT) angiography is the first choice of imaging for diagnosis but in some cases there is discrepancy between the clinical findings and CT images. In this report we present the role of contrast study with transesophageal echocardiography in a patient with suspicion of SVC syndrome but inconclusive CT findings.
Immunomodulatory mechanisms of Sertoli cells (SCs) during phylogeny have not been described previously. This study attempted to reveal mechanisms of SC immune modulation in an evolutionary distant host.
The interaction of the SC cell line derived from Xenopus tropicalis (XtSC) with murine immune cells was studied in vivo and in vitro. The changes in the cytokine production, the intracellular and surface molecules expression on murine immune cells were evaluated after co-culturing with XtSCs. Migration of XtSCs in mouse recipients after intravenous application and subsequent changes in spleen and the testicular immune environment were determined by flow cytometry.
The in vitro co-culture model was established, allowing the study of XtSCs interaction with murine immune cells. Intracellular staining of interleukin (IL-)10 revealed a significant increase in its expression in macrophages and B cells co-cultured with XtSCs, compared to both unstimulated cells and xenogeneic control. On the contrary, a significant decrease in Th lymphocytes expressing interferon-gamma was observed. The expression of both PD-1 ligands (PD-L1 and PD-L2) was upregulated on the macrophage surfaces after co-culture with XtSCs, but not with the controls. XtSCs migrated specifically to testes when administered intravenously and modulated systemic and local testicular microenvironment; this was detected by the expression of molecules associated with suppressive phenotype by CD45
cells in both spleen and testes.
We have demonstrated for the first time that SCs can migrate and modulate immune response in a phylogenetically distant host. It was further observed that SCs induce expression of molecules associated with immunosuppression, such as IL-10 and PD-1 ligands.

This article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the differences and similarities in kidney function between humans, primates, and pigs, in preparation for pig-allograft to human xenotransplantation. The kidney, as the principal defender of body homeostasis, acts as a sensor, effector, and regulator of physiologic feedback systems. Considerations are made for anticipated effects on each system when a pig kidney is placed into a human recipient. Discussion topics include anatomy, global kidney function, sodium and water handling, kidney hormone production and response to circulating hormones, acid-base balance, and calcium and phosphorus handling. Based on available data, pig kidneys are anticipated to be compatible with human physiology, despite a few barriers.Alopecia totalis (AT) is a cosmetically debilitating chronic disease characterized by non-scarring hair loss of the entire scalp. The clinical course of AT is highly unpredictable, and effective durable treatment options are limited. The resolution of alopecia has been reported post-autologous and allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation; however, no cases of AT remission following chemotherapy alone have been described. Herein, we present a case of complete remission of AT following chemotherapy for B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia in a pediatric patient.
The dysregulated expression of serum circular RNAs (circRNAs) has previously been linked to the prognosis of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients, but the clinical and prognostic relevance of serum hsa_circ_0079480levels in this oncogenic setting have yet to be established. Herein, we assessed the putative prognostic relevance of circulating hsa_circ_0079480levels in AML patient serum.
Serum was prepared from blood samples collected from 236 AML patients and 160healthy controls, with hsa_circ_0079480levels therein being quantified by quantitative real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) after which the clinical value of these levels was assessed.
Acute myeloid leukemia patients were found to exhibit significant hsa_circ_0079480 upregulation in their serum as compared to serum from healthy controls, with such upregulation being most profound in individuals with M4/M5 type disease and to be more common in patients with poor cytogenic risk or high white blood cell counts. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves demonstrated that serum hsa_circ_0079480levels were able to effectively differentiate between patients with AML and healthy controls. Moreover, the upregulation of serum hsa_circ_0079480 was found to be closely related to clinicopathological findings and to be an independent predictor of reduced overall and relapse-free survival among individuals diagnosed with AML. Furthermore, serum hsa_circ_0079480levels were markedly decreased after treatment in this patient population, with these levels being lower in patients that achieved complete remission as compared to those patients that did not.
Levels of hsa_circ_0079480 in patient serum may offer value as a prognostic biomarker in AML.

Varying theories of imitation stress the role of experience, but few studies have explicitly tested its role in imitative learning in non-human primates. We tested several predictions regarding the role of experience, conspecific presence, and action compatibility using a stimulus-response compatibility protocol. Nineteen baboons separated into two experimental groups learned to respond by targeting on a touch screen the same stimulus as their neighbor (compatible) or the opposite stimulus (incompatible). They first performed the task with a conspecific demonstrator (social phase) and then a computer demonstrator (ghost phase). After reaching a predetermined success threshold, they were then tested in an opposite compatibility condition (i.e., reversal learning conditions). Seven baboons performed at least two reversals during the social phase, and we found no significant difference between the compatible and incompatible conditions, although we noticed slightly faster response times (RTs) in the compatible condition that disappeared after the first reversal. During the ghost phase, monkeys showed difficulties in learning the incompatible condition, and the compatible condition RTs tended to be slower than during the social phase. Together, these results suggest that (a) there is no strong movement compatibility effect in our task and that (b) the presence of a demonstrator plays a role in eliciting correct responses but is not essential as has been previously shown in human studies.
