Pragmatic Genuine Philosophy

Pragmatism places emphasis on experience and context. It may lack a clear set of fundamental principles or a cohesive ethical framework. This can result in an absence of idealistic goals or a radical changes.

Definition

The word pragmatic is used to describe things or people that are practical, logical and sensible. It is often used to differentiate between idealistic, which refers to an idea or a person that is based upon high principles or ideals. When making decisions, a pragmatic person considers the real world and the circumstances. They focus on what is realistically achievable instead of attempting to reach the ideal course of action.

Pragmatism, a brand new philosophical movement, emphasizes the importance that practical consequences are crucial in determining the meaning, truth or value. It is a third alternative philosophy in contrast to the dominant continental and analytical traditions. It was founded by Charles Sanders Peirce and William James with Josiah Royce as its founders, pragmatism grew into two distinct streams one of which is akin to relativism, and the other toward realism.

The nature of truth is a major issue in the philosophy of pragmatism. Many pragmatists acknowledge that truth is a valuable concept, but they differ on the definition or how it functions in the real world. One method, heavily influenced by Peirce & James, focuses on how people solve issues and make assertions, and focuses on the speech-acts and justification projects that users of language use to determine if something is true. Another approach, that is influenced by Rorty and his followers, focuses on the relatively mundane functions of truth--how it is used to generalize, recommend, and caution--and is less concerned with the full-blown theory of truth.


This neopragmatic interpretation of truth has two flaws. First, it flirts with relativism. Truth is a concept with so many layers of rich and long-standing tradition that it's unlikely its meaning can be reduced to a few commonplace uses as pragmatists do. Another problem is that pragmatism seems to be a method that does not believe in the existence of truth, at the very least in its metaphysical and fundamental form. This is reflected in the fact that pragmatists such as Brandom (who owes an obligation to Peirce and James) are largely absent from metaphysics-related questions in Dewey's vast writings, whereas his works have only one reference to the question of truth.

Purpose

Pragmatism seeks to offer an alternative to the analytic and continental tradition of philosophy. Its first generation was initiated by Charles Sanders Peirce and William James along alongside their Harvard colleague Josiah Royce (1855-1916). These classical pragmatists emphasized the concept of meaning and inquiry, as well as the nature of truth. Their influence was felt through several influential American thinkers, including John Dewey (1859-1952), who applied the theories to education and other dimensions of social improvement, and Jane Addams (1860-1935) who established social work.

In recent years an emerging generation has given pragmatism a wider platform for discussion. Although they differ from the classical pragmatists, many of these neo-pragmatists consider themselves to be part of the same tradition. Their main persona is Robert Brandom, whose work is centered around semantics and the philosophy of language, but also draws upon the philosophy of Peirce and James.

One of the primary distinctions between the classic pragmatists and the neo-pragmatists is their understanding of what it means for an idea to be true. The classical pragmatists focused on a concept called 'truth-functionality,' which states that an idea is genuinely true if it is useful in practice. Neo-pragmatists concentrate on the idea "ideal justified assertibility," which declares that an idea is truly true if it can be justified to a particular audience in a certain manner.

This view is not without its problems. It is often criticized for being used to support unfounded and absurd concepts. The gremlin theory is a prime example of this: It's an idea that works in practice but is unfounded and probably untrue. This is not an insurmountable problem however, it does point out one of pragmatism's main flaws It can be used to justify nearly anything, and that is the case for many ridiculous ideas.

Significance

Pragmatic means practical, relating to the consideration of actual situations and conditions when making decisions. It is also used to refer to a philosophy that emphasizes the practical consequences when determining the meaning, truth or values. The term pragmatism was first used to describe this viewpoint around a century ago when William James (1842-1910) pressed it into service in a speech at the University of California (Berkeley). James confidently claimed that the word was coined by his friend and mentor Charles Sanders Peirce (1839-1914), but the pragmatist outlook quickly earned a name of its own.

The pragmatists resisted analytic philosophy's sharp dichotomies, such as mind and body, thoughts and experience and synthesthetic and analytic. They also rebuffed the idea of truth as something fixed or objective and instead treated it as a constantly evolving socially-determined notion.

James utilized these themes to explore truth in religion. John Dewey (1859-1952) was an influential figure on a second generation of pragmatists who applied the method to education, politics and other aspects of social improvement.

In recent decades, the Neopragmatists have tried to put the pragmatism in a larger Western philosophical framework. They have analyzed the affinities between Peirce’s ideas and those of Kant, other 19th-century idealists, and the emerging science of evolution theory. They also sought to clarify the role of truth in an original epistemology of a priori and to develop a metaphilosophy that is pragmatic that includes theories of language, meaning, and the nature and the origin of knowledge.

Nevertheless, pragmatism has continued to develop and the a posteriori epistemology was developed is considered an important distinction from traditional approaches. The defenders of pragmatism have had to face a myriad of objections that are as old as the theory itself, but have received greater exposure in recent times. Some of them include the notion that pragmatism doesn't work when applied to moral issues and that its claim to "what works" is nothing more than a realism with an unpolished appearance.

Methods

For Peirce the pragmatic explanation of truth was an essential part of his epistemological approach. Peirce saw it as an opportunity to discredit false metaphysical ideas like the Catholic understanding of transubstantiation and Cartesian certainty seeking strategies in epistemology.

The Pragmatic Maxim, according to many modern pragmatists, is the most accurate thing you can hope for from a theory about truth. In this sense, they tend to steer clear of deflationist theories of truth that require verification to be legitimate. Instead they advocate a different method, which they refer to as "pragmatic explication". This involves describing how an idea is utilized in real life and identifying the criteria that must be met in order to be able to recognize it as valid.

It should be noted that this method could be viewed as a type of relativism, and indeed is often criticised for it. But it's less extreme than the deflationist alternatives and is thus a useful way of getting around some of the issues associated with relativism theories of truth.

As a result of this, a number of liberatory philosophical initiatives that are related to eco-philosophy, feminism, Native American philosophy, and Latin American philosophy, look for inspiration in the pragmatist traditions. Moreover many philosophers who are analytic (such as Quine) have adopted pragmatism with a level of enthusiasm that Dewey himself was unable to attain.

It is crucial to realize that pragmatism is a rich concept in the past, has a few serious shortcomings. Particularly, pragmatism fails to provide any valid test of truth, and it fails when applied to moral issues.

A few of the most influential pragmatists, such as Quine and Wilfrid Sellars, also criticized the philosophy. Richard Rorty and Robert Brandom are among the philosophers who have revived the philosophy from its obscurity. These philosophers, while not being classical pragmatists themselves are influenced by the philosophy and work of Peirce James and Wittgenstein.
