Pragmatics and Semantics

A variety of contemporary philosophical approaches to pragmatics focus on semantics. For example, Brandom focuses on linguistic meaning (albeit from a pragmatist perspective).

Others choose a more holistic approach to pragmatics, like relevance theory, which seeks to understand how an expression is perceived by the listener. This approach tends to ignore other aspects of pragmatics such as epistemic discussions about truth.

What exactly is pragmatism?

Pragmatism is a philosophical approach that provides a different perspective to analytic philosophy and continental philosophy. It was developed by Charles Sanders Peirce and extended by his friend and colleague William James, and later developed by Josiah Royce. It was influential in areas of inquiry that ranged from philosophy of science to theology and also found a place in ethics as well as aesthetics, philosophy of language and social theory. The pragmatist tradition continues to grow.


The core of classical pragmatism is the pragmatic maxim, a rule for defining the significance of hypotheses by investigating their 'practical consequences and their implications for experience in specific circumstances. This leads to a distinctive epistemological outlook that is a kind of 'inquiry-based epistemology' and an anti-Cartesian explication of the norms that govern inquiry. The early pragmatists had a split on whether pragmatism was a science-based philosophy that was based on a monism regarding truth (following Peirce) or a broad alethic pluralitism (James & Dewey).

Understanding knowledge is a central question for the pragmatists. Rorty is one of the pragmatists who is skeptical of notions of knowledge that are based on 'immediate experiences'. Others, such as Peirce or James, are skeptical of the correspondence theory which asserts that the most authentic beliefs are those that accurately reflect reality.

Other issues in pragmatism include the relationship between belief and reality as well as the nature of human rationality, the importance of values and virtues, and the meaning of life. Pragmatists have also developed a wide variety of ideas and methods in fields such as semiotics philosophy of language, the philosophy of religion, ethics, philosophy of science and theology. What is the relation between what is said and what happens?

Semantics and Pragmatics can be viewed as being on opposite sides of the continuum. On the close side, semantics is viewed and pragmatics is on the far side. Carston for instance claims that modern pragmatics follows at least three main lines: those who see it as a philosophy in the tradition of Grice, those who focus its interaction with grammar and those who are concerned with the interpretation of utterances. Near-side pragmatics covers questions like the resolution of unclearness, the use of proper names indexicals, demonstratives, anaphoras, and presupposition. It is also thought to encompass some issues involving explicit descriptions.

What is the relationship between pragmatics and semantics?

The study of pragmatics is the study and application of meaning in a language context. It is a subset of linguistics and examines how people use words to convey different meanings. It is often compared with semantics, which studies the literal meaning of words in sentences or in larger chunks of speech.

The relationship between pragmatics, semantics and their interrelationship is a complex one. The most important distinction is that pragmatics considers other factors that go beyond the literal meaning of words, such as the intended meaning as well as the context in which the utterance was spoken. This gives a more naive understanding of the meaning of an expression. Semantics also considers the relationship between words, whereas pragmatics is more focused on the relationship between interlocutors as well as their context.

In recent years, the neopragmatism movement has been heavily focused on metaphilosophy as well as the philosophy of language. Many schools of thought have emerged and incorporated aspects of pragmatism in their own philosophy.
