Therefore, it could be concluded that cadmium could increase intracellular ROS, result in cellular oxidative stress, activate JNK, ERK and p38 MAPK pathways and ultimately lead to apoptosis of BEAS-2B cells by activating mitochondria-mediated intrinsic apoptosis pathway. This study provided useful information to elucidate the toxicity of cadmium and revealed the possible mechanism for the occurrence of lung disease induced by cadmium.Acid mine drainage (AMD) is one of an important pollution sources associated with mining activities and often inhibits plant growth. Plant growth promoting bacteria has received extensive attention for enhancing adaptability of plants growing in AMD polluted soils. The present study investigated the effect of plant growth promoting Bacillus spp. Tofacitinib mw (strains UM5, UM10, UM13, UM15 and UM20) to improve vetiver (Chrysopogon zizanioides L.) adaptability in a soil irrigated with 50% AMD. Bacillus spp. exhibited P-solubilization, IAA and siderophore production. The Bacillus spp. strains UM10 and UM13 significantly increased shoot (4.2-2.5%) and root (3.4-1.9%) biomass in normal and AMD-impacted soil, respectively. Bacillus sp. strain UM20 significantly increased soil AP (379.93 mg/kg) while strain UM13 increased TN (1501.69 mg/kg) and WEON (114.44 mg/kg) than control. Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi, Acidobacteria and Bacteroidetes are the dominant phyla, of which Acidobacteria (12%) and Bacteroidetes (8.5%) were dominated in soil inoculated with Bacillus sp. strain UM20 while Proteobacteria (70%) in AMD soil only. However, the Chao1 and evenness indices were significantly increased in soil inoculated with Bacillus sp. strain UM13. Soil pH, AP and N fractions were positively correlated with the inoculation of bacterial strains UM13 and UM20. Plant growth promoting Bacillus spp. strains UM13 and UM20 were the main contributors to the variations in the rhizosphere bacterial community structure, improving soil available P, TN, WEON, NO3--N thus could be a best option to promote C. zizanioides adaptability in AMD-impacted soils. The strategical integration of membrane water filtration with semiconductor photocatalysis presents a frontier in deep purification with a self-cleaning capability. However, the membrane fouling caused by the cake layer of the reclaimed TiO2 nanoparticles is a key obstacle. Herein, mesoporous WO3/TiO2 spheres (∼450 nm in diameter) consisting of numerous self-assembled WO3-decoated anatase TiO2 nanocrystallites are successfully prepared via a facile wet-chemistry route. The decoration of monolayered WO3 significantly affects the surface, photocatalytic, and optical properties of original mesoporous TiO2 spheres. XRD and Raman analyses show the presence of monolayered WO3 suppresses the crystal growth of TiO2 during the calcination process, significantly improves the surface acidity, and causes an obvious red shift in absorption edge. These favorable textural properties, coupling the enhanced interfacial charge carrier separation, render mesoporous WO3/TiO2 spheres with a superior photocatalytic activity in degradation of methylene blue under UV, visible, and solar light irradiations. The optimal molar ratio of W/Ti is examined to 6%. The synthesized mesoporous WO3/TiO2 spheres also show much higher flux during membrane filtration in both dead-end and cross-flow modes, suggesting a promising photocatalyst for concurrent membrane filtration and solar photocatalysis.Due to economic, environmental and geopolitical issues, the development of permanent magnets with a composition free of rare earth elements and with acceptable magnetic properties has been considered a priority by the international community, being MnAl based alloys amongst the most promising candidates. The aim of this work was to evaluate the toxicity of powders of two forms of newly developed MnAl(C) permanent magnets through exposure experiments applying three model organisms, using as a benchmark powders of a commercial rare-earth-containing magnet (Nd2Fe14B). For this purpose, the direct exposure to the different particles suspensions as well as to magnets leachates was evaluated. Both viability and oxidative stress assays were applied in an adenocarcinomic human alveolar basal epithelial cell line (A549) and in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, together with the bioluminescent inhibition assay in the Gram negative bacterium Vibrio fischeri. The obtained results indicate that MnAl(C) permanent magnets, in general terms, presented similar toxicity than the Nd magnet for the selected biological models under the studied conditions. Overall, the presented data provide, for the first time, an in vitro toxicity analysis of MnAl based magnets. Background contamination levels of contemporary persistent organic pollutants (POPs) may be elevated due to local discharges, and hence it is of high importance to assess and monitor them in alpine and Polar Regions. This study investigated the role of waste disposal in the Tibetan plateau as the local source of short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs). SCCPs were determined in soils from the urban landfill and rural dumpsites, with a concentration range of 56.8-1348 ng/g dw. The gradient descent of SCCP levels from Lhasa landfill to the surrounding soils with increasing distances suggested a significant SCCP release from waste disposal. The transport pattern was well fitted by the Boltzmann equation after normalization in terms of soil organic carbon contents. Compared to the landfill cells closed in early years, the recently closed cells contained higher concentrations but lower proportions of the short-chain congener groups, likely reflecting the SCCP use history in Tibet. In open-burning dumpsites, higher SCCP levels and dominance of lighter congener groups indicates that such crude waste treatment process might cause an extra release of volatile SCCPs. This study elucidates local SCCP inputs to the background environment, and demonstrates that both urbanization and badly-managed landfill have been contributing to the presence of contemporary POPs in the Tibetan Plateau.Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox), a low-energy-consuming technology, can be used to remove nitrogen from industrial saline wastewater. However, high salinity inhibits anammox microbial activity. This study investigated the effect of salinity on nitrogen removal performance and microbial community structure. The experiment used an up-flow anammox reactor fed with synthetic wastewater with salinity increased from 0.5 to 2.5%. Results indicated that 80% nitrogen removal efficiency can be achieved at 2% salinity with a nitrogen loading rate of 2.0 kg-N/m3/d. Anammox performance significantly deteriorated at 2.5% salinity. High-throughput sequencing revealed that Planctomycetes (representative anammox bacteria) increased with salinity, replacing Proteobacteria (representative heterotrophic denitrifying bacteria) in the microbial community. qPCR analysis indicated that relative abundance of "Candidatus Kuenenia" within anammox bacteria increased from 3.96 to 83.41%, corresponding to salinity of 0.5-2.0%, and subsequently decreased to 63.
