Randomized controlled long-term studies are needed.ClinicalTrials ID NCT04687943.Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) process has been acknowledged as an environmentally friendly and time-saving technique capable of achieving efficient nitrogen removal. However, the community of nitrification process in anammox-inoculated wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) has not been elucidated. In this study, ammonia oxidation (AO) and nitrite oxidation (NO) rates were analyzed with the incubation of activated sludge from Xinfeng WWTPs (Taiwan, China), and the community composition of nitrification communities were investigated by high-throughput sequencing. Results showed that both AO and NO had strong activity in the activated sludge. The average rates of AO and NO in sample A were 6.51 µmol L-1 h-1 and 6.52 µmol L-1 h-1, respectively, while the rates in sample B were 14.48 µmol L-1 h-1 and 14.59 µmol L-1 h-1, respectively. The abundance of the nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) Nitrospira was 0.89-4.95 × 1011 copies/g in both samples A and B, the abundance of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) was 1.01-9.74 × 109 copies/g. In contrast, the abundance of ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) was much lower than AOB, only with 1.28-1.53 × 105 copies/g in samples A and B. The AOA community was dominated by Nitrosotenuis, Nitrosocosmicus, and Nitrososphaera, while the AOB community mainly consisted of Nitrosomonas and Nitrosococcus. The dominant species of Nitrospira were Candidatus Nitrospira defluvii, Candidatus Nitrospira Ecomare2 and Nitrospira inopinata. In summary, the strong nitrification activity was mainly catalyzed by AOB and Nitrospira, maintaining high efficiency in nitrogen removal in the anammox-inoculated WWTPs by providing the substrates required for denitrification and anammox processes.A new contact stamping method for fabrication of paper-based analytical devices (PADs) is reported. It uses an all-purpose acrylic varnish and 3D-printed stamps to pattern hydrophobic structures on paper substrates. The use of 3D printing allows quickly prototyping the desired stamp shape without resorting to third-party services, which are often expensive and time consuming. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report regarding the use of this material for creation of hydrophobic barriers in paper substrates, as well as this 3D printing-based stamping method. The acrylic varnish was characterized and the features of the stamping method were studied. The PADs developed here presented better compatibility with organic solvents and surfactants compared with similar protocols. Furthermore, the use of this contact stamping method for fabrication of paper electrochemical devices was also possible, as well as multiplexed microfluidic devices for lateral flow testing. The analytical applicability of the varnish-based PADs was demonstrated through the image-based colorimetric quantification of iron in pharmaceutical samples. A limit of detection of 0.61 mg L-1 was achieved. The results were compared with spectrophotometry for validation and presented great concordance (relative error was less then 5% and recoveries were between 104 and 108%). Thus, taking into account the performance of the devices explored here, we believe this novel contact stamping method is a very interesting alternative for production of PADs, exhibiting great potentiality. In addition, this work brings a new application of 3D printing in analytical sciences.A strategy for preparing a dual-stimuli-responsive porous polymer membrane enzyme reactor (D-PPMER) is described, consisting of poly (styrene-maleic anhydride-N-isopropylacrylamide-acrylate-3',3'-dimethyl-6-nitro-spiro[2H-1-benzopyran-2,2'-indoline]-1'-esterspiropyran ester) [P(S-M-N-SP)] and D-amino acid oxidase. Tunable control via "on/off" 365 nm UV light irradiation and temperature variation was used to change the membrane surface configuration and adjust the enzymolysis efficiency of the D-PPMER. A chiral capillary electrophoresis technique was developed for evaluation of the enzymatic efficiency of D-PPMER with a Zn(II)-dipeptide complex as the chiral selector and D,L-serine as the substrate. Interestingly, the enzymatic kinetic reaction rate of D-PPMER under UV irradiation at 36 °C (9.2 × 10-2 mM·min-1) was 3.2-fold greater than that of the free enzyme (2.9 × 10-2 mM·min-1). This was because upon UV irradiation at high temperature, the P(SP) and P(N) moieties altered from a "stretched" to a "curled" state to encapsulate the enzyme in smaller cavities. The confinement effect of the cavities further improved the enzymatic efficiency of the D-PPMER. This protocol highlights the outstanding potential of smart polymers, enables tunable control over the kinetic rates of stimuli-responsive enzyme reactors, and establishes a platform for adjusting enzymolysis efficiency using two different stimuli.
Beneficial effect of long-chain ω-3 fatty acids against symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has been indicated in previous studies. We examined the effect of flaxseed and anti-inflammatory diet in patients with RA.
The 12-week intervention was performed on 120 patients with RA who were randomized to three groups of flaxseed (30g/day) plus anti-inflammatory diet (AIF group), flaxseed (30g/day) plus regular diet (RF group), and roasted wheat (30g/day) plus regular diet (RW group). Disease Activity Score 28-joints (DAS28), health assessment questionnaire (HAQ) disability and pain, quality of life, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP), rheumatoid factor, and anti-cyclic citrullinated peptides (anti-CCP) were measured before and after trial. Analysis was performed using per-protocol and intention-to-treat (ITT) approaches.
One hundred and two patients completed the protocol. Flaxseed decreased DAS28 in RF group compared to RW (-0.87 ± 1.11 vs. -0.24 ± 0.78; P = 0.014). Pain severity (P ≤ 0.001), morning stiffness (P < 0.05), and disease feeling (P < 0.01) decreased significantly in AIF and RF groups. HAQ disability and quality of life measurements improved in all 3 groups, with a greater extent in AIF and RF groups (P < 0.001) compared to RW. Between-group differences were significant for DAS28, pain scores, and physical and mental health variables. ESR, CRP, anti-CCP, and rheumatoid factor were not different between groups. Results of ITT analysis did not cause much difference.
In conclusion, flaxseed may be used as a helpful adjuvant therapy for patients with RA. Calls are open for examining the effect of anti-inflammatory diet on RA symptoms.

Few studies have examined the secular trend of the energy intake distribution, and its effect on future risk of hyperglycemia. This study aims to describe trajectories of energy intake distribution over 12years and relate them to subsequent risk of hyperglycemia over 9years of follow-up.
Our study used ten waves of data from the CHNS survey, a population-based longitudinal survey in China, ongoing since 1989. We examined a cohort of adult participants who were free from diabetes but had at least three waves of dietary data from 1997 to 2009. We assessed energy intake using three consecutive 24h recalls. We used these data to identify trajectory groups of energy intake distribution by multi-trajectory model based on energy intake proportions of breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We followed up participants for hyperglycemia, diabetes, and impaired fasting glucose for 9years from 2009 to 2018. Outcomes were ascertained with fasting glucose, serum HbA1c, and self-report of diabetes and/or glucose-lowering medicat28, 95% CI = 1.02, 1.61). No association was found for incident diabetes and impaired fasting glucose. Among males, Group 3 was associated with higher risk of incident hyperglycemia in 9years of follow-up (RR = 1.44, 95% CI = 1.07, 1.94). No relationship was found in females.

A shift towards more plant-based diets promotes both health and sustainability. Selleckchem 10058-F4 However, controlled trials addressing the nutritional effects of replacing animal proteins with plant proteins are lacking. We examined the effects of partly replacing animal proteins with plant proteins on critical vitamin and mineral intake and statuses in healthy adults using a whole-diet approach.
Volunteers aged 20-69years (107 female, 29 male) were randomly allocated into one of three 12-week intervention groups with different dietary protein compositions ANIMAL 70% animal-source protein/30% plant-source protein; 50/50 50% animal/50% plant; PLANT 30% animal/70% plant; all with designed protein intake of 17 E%. We analysed vitamin B-12, iodine, iron, folate, and zinc intakes from 4-day food records, haemoglobin, ferritin, transferrin receptor, folate, and holotranscobalamin II from fasting blood samples, and iodine from 24-h urine.
At the end point, vitamin B-12 intake and status were lower in PLANT than in 50/50 or ANIMAL groups (P ≤ 0.007 for all). Vitamin B-12 intake was also lower in 50/50 than in ANIMAL (P < 0.001). Iodine intake and status were lower in both 50/50 and PLANT than in ANIMAL (P ≤ 0.002 for all). Iron and folate intakes were higher in PLANT than in ANIMAL (P < 0.001, P = 0.047), but no significant differences emerged in the respective biomarkers.
Partial replacement of animal protein foods with plant protein foods led to marked decreases in the intake and status of vitamin B-12 and iodine. No changes in iron status were seen. More attention needs to be paid to adequate micronutrient intakes when following flexitarian diets.

It effectively combines several advantages of invasive and non-invasive imaging modalities like ultrasound, angiography, and computed tomography in a single MRI acquisition and provides an unprecedented characterization of velocity fields acquired non-invasively in vivo. Functional and morphological imaging of the abdominal vasculature is especially challenging due to its complex and variable anatomy with a wide range of vessel calibers and flow velocities and the need for large volumetric coverage. Despite these challenges, 4D flow MRI is a promising diagnostic and prognostic tool as many pathologies in the abdomen are associated with changes of either hemodynamics or morphology of arteries, veins, or the portal venous system. In this review article, we will discuss technical aspects of the implementation of abdominal 4D flow MRI ranging from patient preparation and acquisition protocol over post-processing and quality control to final data analysis.
