PURPOSE The hallmark menopausal symptom, vasomotor symptoms (VMS), has been linked to adverse health indicators. However, the relationship between VMS and biological aging has not been tested. We examined associations between menopausal VMS and biological aging as assessed by 2 DNA methylation-based epigenetic aging indicators previously linked to poor health outcomes. METHODS Participants were members of the Women's Health Initiative Observational Study integrative genomics substudy (N = 1206) who had both ovaries and were not taking hormone therapy. Relationships between VMS at enrollment (presence, severity) or VMS timing groups (no VMS not at menopause onset nor at study enrollment; early VMS at menopause onset but not at enrollment; persistent VMS at menopause onset and study enrollment; and late VMS at enrollment but not at menopause onset) and epigenetic clock indicators predictive of physical aging and early death (DNAm PhenoAge, DNAm GrimAge) were tested in linear regression models adjusting for age, race/ethnicity, hysterectomy, education, body mass index, smoking, and, in additional models, sleep disturbance. RESULTS Women were on average 65 years of age at enrollment. Severe hot flashes at enrollment were associated with higher DNAm PhenoAge [relative to no hot flashes B (SE) = 2.79 (1.27), P = 0.028, multivariable]. Further, late-occurring VMS were associated with both higher DNAm PhenoAge [B (SE) = 2.15 (0.84), P = 0.011] and DNAm GrimAge [B (SE) = 1.09 (0.42), P = 0.010, multivariable] relative to no VMS. MAIN CONCLUSIONS Among postmenopausal women, severe or late-occurring VMS were associated with accelerated epigenetic age, controlling for chronological age. In the hippocampus, disinhibition of principal cells is provided by the interneuron-specific interneurons that express the vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP-IS) and innervate selectively inhibitory interneurons. By combining optophysiological experiments with computational models, we determined the impact of synaptic inputs onto the network state-dependent recruitment of VIP-IS cells. We found that VIP-IS cells fire spikes in response to both the Schaffer collateral and the temporoammonic pathway activation. Moreover, by integrating their intrinsic and synaptic properties into computational models, we predicted recruitment of these cells between the rising phase and peak of theta oscillation and during ripples. Two-photon Ca2+-imaging in awake mice supported in part the theoretical predictions, revealing a significant speed modulation of VIP-IS cells and their preferential albeit delayed recruitment during theta-run epochs, with estimated firing at the rising phase and peak of the theta cycle. However, it also uncovered that VIP-IS cells are not activated during ripples. Thus, given the preferential theta-modulated firing of VIP-IS cells in awake hippocampus, we postulate that these cells may be important for information gating during spatial navigation and memory encoding. © The Author(s) 2020. For permissions, please e-mail [email protected] The 12-month impact of federally-mandated smoke free housing (SFH) policy adoption (July 2018) was assessed using two markers of ambient secondhand smoke (SHS) airborne nicotine and particulate matter at the 2.5 micrometer threshold (PM2.5). METHODS We measured markers of SHS in Norfolk, VA from December 2017 to December 2018 in six federally-subsidized multi-unit public housing buildings. Multi-level regression was used to model the following comparisons (1) the month immediately before SFH implementation vs. the month immediately after, and (2) December, 2017 vs. December, 2018. RESULTS There was a 27% reduction in indoor PM2.5 and a 32% reduction in airborne nicotine in the first month after SFH adoption, compared to the month prior to adoption. However, there was a 33% increase in PM2.5 and a 25% increase in airborne nicotine after 12 months. CONCLUSIONS HUD-mandated SFH can reduce SHS in multi-unit housing. However, SFH could also plausibly increase indoor smoking. Policy approaches adopted by individual properties or housing authorities-for example, property-wide bans vs. allowing designated smoking areas-could be driving this potential unintended consequence. © The Author(s) 2020. Here, the WRKY transcription factor Vqwrky53 was isolated from the Chinese wild grape, Vitisquinquangularis. Vqwrky53 was expressed in a variety of tissues and responded to powdery mildew infection and to exogenous hormone application. VqWRKY53 was located in the nucleus and had transcriptional activation activity in yeast. The yeast two-hybrid (Y2H) assay and the bimolecular fluorescence complementation (BiFC) assay confirmed that VqWRKY53 interacted physically with VqMYB14 and VqMYB15 which have previously been reported to regulate stilbene synthesis. When Vqwrky53 was overexpressed in grape leaves, the expressions of VqSTS32 and VqSTS41 and the content of stilbenes were increased. The yeast one-hybrid assay demonstrated that Vqwrky53 could bind directly to the promoters of STS genes. Overexpression of Vqwrky53 activated GUS expression, driven by STS promoters and co-expressing Vqwrky53 with VqMYB14 and VqMYB15 showed stronger regulatory functions. The adverse effects of lung cancer stigma are associated with several adverse psychosocial and behavioral outcomes. One potential clinician-level intervention target is empathic communication because of its association with higher rates of patients' satisfaction, treatment adherence, and lower levels of psychological distress. This study describes the conceptual model and evaluation of clinician-targeted empathic communication skills training to reduce lung cancer patients' experience of stigma. The goal of the training module is to enhance clinician recognition and responsiveness to lung cancer patients' empathic opportunities by communicating understanding, reducing stigma and distress, and providing support. Thirty multidisciplinary HCPs working in thoracic oncology, thoracic surgery, or pulmonary medicine participated in 2.25 hr of didactic and experiential training on responding empathically to patients with lung cancer. Overall, participants reported highly favorable evaluations of the training, with at least 90% of participants agreeing or strongly agreeing to 11 of the 12 items assessing clinical relevance, novelty, clarity, and facilitator effectiveness. Participants' self-efficacy to communicate empathically with lung cancer patients increased significantly from pretraining to posttraining, t(29) = -4.58, p less then .001. The empathic communication skills training module was feasible and well received by thoracic and pulmonary medicine HCPs and demonstrated improvements in self-efficacy in empathic communication from pretraining to posttraining. METHODS We utilized enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to determine 14-3-3η and anticyclic citrullinated peptide antibody (anti-CCP) levels, with rheumatoid factor (RF) level detected by rate nephelometry. The diagnostic value of each index was determined via receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, and the association between 14-3-3η and osteoporosis was assessed using multiple logistic regression analysis. RESULTS Serum levels of 14-3-3η were 3.26 ng per mL in patients with RA. These levels were helpful in identifying patients with the disease, with the area under the curve (AUC) being 0.879 and 0.853, respectively, from all healthy control individuals and patients with RA. Combining 14-3-3η with RF or anti-CCP increased the diagnostic rate. Increasing numbers live with the combined effects of age-related chronic illness or disability, social isolation and/or poor mental health. Social prescribing has potential to benefit older people by helping those with social, emotional or practical needs to access relevant services and resources within the local community. However, researchers have highlighted limitations with the existing evidence-base, while clinicians express concerns about the quality of onward referral services, liability and upfront investment required. The current article provides a critical review of evidence on social prescribing, drawing on the RE-AIM Framework (Glasgow et al., 1999) to identify questions that will need to be addressed in order to inform both the design and delivery of services and the evolving research agenda around social prescribing. We emphasise the need for researchers and planners to work together to develop a more robust evidence-base, advancing understanding of the impacts of social prescribing (on individuals, services and communities), factors associated with variation in outcomes and strategies needed to implement effective and sustainable programmes. We also call on policymakers to recognise the need for investment in allied initiatives to address barriers to engagement in social prescribing programmes, provide targeted support for carers and improve access to older adult mental health services. We conclude that social prescribing has potential to support older people's health and wellbeing, but this potential will only be realised through strategic alignment of research, local level implementation and national policy and investment. © The Author(s) 2020.
