Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album it was an ode to the traditional sextet style, and it was a more consistent, more powerful album with a sharper edge. The more edgier sound of Turn Back reflected the growth of the band. Bobby Kimball's growing virtuosity was reflected by the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. David Paich's work was more refined, sharper and less cloying than on previous efforts.


After touring to promote their album, the group recorded their Amsterdam live performance that was released by Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. A new studio album was released a few months later, and the group embarked on a world-wide tour to promote it. During this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started looking through old demos and tapes in search of an album that would feature songs that had never been recorded before. It was released as a double album titled Then And Now in 2001. It was the first album by the band not to feature any single song that had the word "A" in the title, and it also contained one previously not released track, "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure, and singer Williams was suffering from a serious laryngitis infection which hampered his singing. In addition, Hungate returned to Nashville and drummer Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.

Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the original members of Asia, met in England in the beginning of 2006 to discuss the possibility that the band could be revived. The lineup, with the exception of Howe who was working with Yes at the time, was renamed Toto XIV. They toured extensively.
