The Self-Employed Tax Credit (SETC) was introduced by the government in response to the challenges faced by self-employed individuals during the COVID-19 pandemic. Eligible self-employed professionals, such as entrepreneurs, freelancers, and independent contractors, can receive up to $32,220 in financial relief through this refundable tax credit if they have experienced qualified sick or family leave related to COVID-19.

SETC Eligibility

In order to be eligible for the SETC, individuals must have generated income from self-employment in either 2019, 2020, or 2021 and experienced a disruption in their work as a result of COVID-19.
This could include:

Inability to work as a result of a quarantine or isolation directive
Displaying signs of COVID-19 and in need of a medical evaluation
Providing care for an individual with COVID-19 or in quarantine
Dealing with the closure of schools or childcare facilities for children during the pandemic


- Eligibility is not restricted to individuals who have been diagnosed with COVID-19.


Claiming the SETC

- In order to receive the SETC, Form 7202 must be submitted along with your 2020 and/or 2021 tax returns.
The credit claiming deadline has now been extended to April 2025.
Collect all required paperwork and submit your application promptly.


Calculating your SETC Amount

Calculate your net self-employment earnings for the tax year.
Calculate your average daily self-employment income by dividing your net self-employment earnings by 260.
Calculate SETC scam of self-employment income by multiplying your average daily earnings by the number of days you were unable to work because of COVID-19.
Adjust your calculation if your estimated credit exceeds the daily limits.
