In our work, a thermal hydrogenation technique was applied to modify anodized titanium dioxide nanotubes (TNTs). However, the effects of the hydrogenated surface on soft-tissue cells remain unclear. The aim of the present study was to investigate the bioactivities of human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs) on structured surfaces, which determine the early formation of soft tissue sealing. Three groups were examined commercially pure titanium (Ti), anodized TNTs (air-TNTs) and hydrogenated TNTs (H2-TNTs). Scanning electron microscopy showed the nanotubular topography on the titanium surfaces after anodization. Then, hydrogenation ensured that the H2-TNTs were superhydrophilic with a contact angle of 3.5 ± 0.8°. In vitro studies such as cell adhesion assays, cell morphology, immunocytochemistry, wound healing assays, real-time PCR and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays displayed enhanced adhesion, migration, relative gene expression levels, and extracellular matrix synthesis of the HGFs on H2-TNTs. Interestingly, focal adhesion kinase activation and integrin-mediated adhesion seemed to be induced by the H2-TNT surface. link2 Our results revealed that a superhydrophilic nanostructure modified by anodization and hydrogenation can improve the bioactivity of HGFs and connective tissue regeneration, which will further promote and expand the application of titanium dioxide nanotubes in dental implants.Recently, zinc-based materials have gained immense attention as antimicrobial agents. In this study, zinc-doped mesoporous hydroxyapatites (HAps) with various Zn contents were prepared by co-precipitation using a phosphoprotein as the porous template. The use of the phosphoprotein as the porous template resulted in the formation of zinc-doped mesoporous HAps (mHAps) with large pores and specific surface area (182 m2 g-1), as indicated by the nitrogen adsorption/desorption measurements. The formation of the zinc-doped HAps was confirmed by various analytical techniques such as X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The biomaterials prepared in this study were used as antimicrobial agents against gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and gram-negative (Escherichia coli) bacteria. The Zn2%-mHAp sample showed the maximum bacterial inhibitory concentrations of 50 ± 5% and 77 ± 5% for the Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, respectively. The antibacterial activity of the mHAp samples depended strongly on their Zn2+ content. Thus, the use of a biotemplate and Zn2+ ions is an efficient approach for the formation of novel HAp-based biomaterials with promising antibacterial properties. This synthesis approach will pave a new pathway for the functionalization of other materials for different biomedical applications.In the present study, the silibinin (SLB) was loaded into porous starch (PS) in the form of nanoparticles (SNPS) by the liquid antisolvent precipitation (LAP) method, so as to improve its solubility and bioavailability. Firstly, the different experimental parameters on drug loading (DL) of the SLB in the LAP process were optimized through the single-factor experiments. Under the optimum conditions, the DL and the encapsulation efficiency (EE) of the SNPS were 9.49 ± 0.37 % and 89.93 ± 0.64 %, respectively. Compared with free SLB and SLB nanoparticles (SN), the SNPS had a higher solubility, and was about 180.81 ± 5.32 μg/mL in artificial gastric juice (AGJ) and was about 88.91 ± 4.14 μg/mL in artificial intestinal juice (AIJ), respectively. The in vitro release study demonstrated a slow and sustained ± release of SLB from the SNPS with the SN and free SLB as controls. The pharmacokinetic results showed that the Cmax and AUC(0-t) of the SNPS (87.71 ± 7.24 μg/L, 439.55 ± 8.76 μg/L*h) increased when compared with the SN (60.31 ± 8.98 μg/L, 206.51 ± 12.24 μg/L*h) and free SLB (26.08 ± 1.43 μg/L, 102.63 ± 7.15 μg/L*h), showing its ability to improve SLB's pharmacokinetic properties.We investigated mixed-protein gels made from sodium caseinate and ovalbumin at different ratios with use of the acidification agent glucono-δ-lactone. Dynamic viscoelastic measurements revealed that increasing the ovalbumin content decreased the mechanical properties of the gel but accelerated onset time of the phase transition. Ultrasound spectroscopy during gelation revealed that the relative velocity gradually decreased, whereas the ultrasonic attenuation increased during the whole acidification process until gelation was complete, although these changes were much smaller than those observed with heat-induced gelation. Confocal laser scanning microscopy along with scanning electron microscopy revealed that although uniform mixing of sodium caseinate and ovalbumin was observed, sodium caseinate is likely to mainly lead formation of the gel network, and the porosity of the resulting gel network depends on the ratio of these two components. The results demonstrate that confocal laser scanning microscopy is a useful tool for analyzing both the networks within mixed-protein gels and the contribution of each protein to the network and gelation.The gut microbiota plays an important role in the occurrence and development of neuroimmunological diseases. The consequent accelerated melting of the cryosphere is not only a threat from a climate perspective but also for water resources and snow-dependent species and activities, worsened by the mega-drought affecting the region since the last decade. Given its proximity to the Andes, emissions from the Metropolitan Area of Santiago, Chile, are believed to be among the main contributors to deposition on glaciers. However, no evidence backs such an assertion, especially given the usually subsident and stable conditions in wintertime, when the snowpack is at its maximum extent. Based on high-resolution chemistry-transport modeling with WRF-CHIMERE, the present work shows that, for the month of July 2015, up to 40% of black carbon dry deposition on snow or ice covered areas in the Central Andes downwind from the Metropolitan area can be attributed to emissions from Santiago. link3 Through the analysis of aerosol tracers we determine (i) that the areas of the Metropolitan Area where emissions matter most when it comes to export towards glaciers are located in Eastern Santiago near the foothills of the Andes, (ii) the crucial role of the network of Andean valleys that channels pollutants up to remote locations near glaciers, following gentle slopes. A direct corollary is that severe urban pollution, and deposition of impurities on the Andes, are anti-correlated phenomena. Finally, a two-variable meteorological index is developed that accounts for the dynamics of aerosol export towards the Andes, based on the zonal wind speed over the urban area, and the vertical diffusion coefficient in the valleys close to ice and snow covered terrain. Numerous large urban areas are found along the Andes so that the processes studied here can shed light on similar investigations for other glaciers-dependent Andean regions.Delta ecosystems are areas of high ecologic and economic values, where wildlife commonly shares the territory with intensive agricultural activities, particularly, rice cultivation and seafood production. This work aimed at evaluating the occurrence of a wide spectrum of pesticides and transformation products in the water of irrigation and drainage channels of the Ebro River Delta (NE Spain) during the main rice-growing season, when pesticide application is at its peak. Furthermore, the impact that these contaminants may have on local ecosystems and seafood production activities was assessed. A total of 35 pesticides, mainly associated with rice cultivation, out of the 66 analyzed were detected. Bentazone, propanil, MCPA, acetamiprid, and triallate were found at the μg/L level. Cybutryne, despite being banned in the European Union, was measured for the first time in the area and at concentrations above its environmental quality standard (11-49 ng/L). Sixteen additional banned pesticides were also detected at trace levels, likely due to their desorption from soil and sediment particles. Despite its dilution when discharged into the bay, this study demonstrates that the agricultural use of pesticides may have important effects on water quality and may cause a serious hazard for aquatic non-target organisms, although other factors such as temperature and salinity may play also a relevant role. Bentazone, cybutryne, dicofol, imidacloprid, MCPA, and propanil may pose a moderate to high risk for aquatic organisms at the concentration levels measured during the rice-growing season. The co-occurrence of pesticides may result in a high risk for aquatic organisms in all sampling locations. The finding of the EU Watch List insecticides imidacloprid and acetamiprid at concentrations above their maximum acceptable method detection limit calls for control of their use and revision of their legal status.Microplastic pollution has become ubiquitous, affecting a wide variety of biota. Although microplastics are known to alter the development of a range of marine invertebrates, no studies provide a detailed morphological characterisation of the developmental defects. Likewise, the developmental toxicity of chemicals leached from plastic particles is understudied. The consequences of these developmental effects are likely underestimated, and the effects on ecosystems are unknown. Using the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus as a model, we studied the effects of leachates of three forms of plastic pellet new industrial pre-production plastic nurdles, beached pre-production nurdles, and floating filters, known as biobeads, also retrieved from the environment. Our chemical analyses show that leachates from beached pellets (biobead and nurdle pellets) and highly plasticised industrial pellets (PVC) contain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and polychlorinated biphenyls, which are known to be detrimental to development and other life stages of animals.
