The relationship between lifetime trauma burden and various mental health issues of relevance to U.S. veterans may be mediated by mindfulness, or the ability to pay attention to the present moment. Interventions that bolster mindfulness may help mitigate the negative impact of cumulative traumas in this population. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2021 APA, all rights reserved).

Therapeutic methods that apply a secondary task while clients recall a trauma memory may further assist in modifying the vividness and emotionality of the trauma memory and in reducing intrusions. In this experiment, we aimed to investigate whether the emotional valence (positive vs. neutral) and sensory modality (visual vs. auditory) of a secondary task reduces the vividness and emotionality of the trauma memory and the proactive interference. Method Sixty PTSD patients exposed to road traffic accident traumas were randomized to one of four groups in a 2 (emotional valence positive, neutral) × 2 (modality visual, auditory) design. Participants were then exposed to a positive or a neutral clip that was visual or auditory and were required to recall the trauma memory during exposure to the clip. Vividness and emotionality of the trauma memory and proactive interference were assessed before and after exposure to the clip and at a 1-week follow-up. Results Results revealed that participants who recalled the trauma memory while exposed to the positive clip reported their trauma memory as being less distressing (but not less vivid) and indicated less proactive interference than did participants exposed to the neutral clip. Nevertheless, modality had no significant effect in attenuating the proactive interference under conditions of modality congruence. Conclusion Inducing positive emotion while performing a dual task may be an effective module in therapeutic approaches. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2021 APA, all rights reserved).
Military veterans often encounter events with chronic or repeated traumas of an interpersonal nature that might lead to emotional, relational, and spiritual suffering. Research is needed to assess whether and/or how emerging conceptions of moral injury (MI) align with existing trauma-related conditions.

Focusing on 173 veterans from the United Kingdom who had recently pursued mental health treatment, we examined associations between self- and other-directed outcomes related to MI and the World Health Organization's International Classification System for Diseases, 11th version (ICD-11), criteria for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex PTSD (CPTSD) in two ways.

First, drawing on validated tools for assessing MI and PTSD/CPTSD, analyses of variance revealed 57.2% of veterans in the sample who possibly met criteria for CPTSD reported greater MI related to perpetration- and betrayal-based events compared to those with and without possible PTSD. Second, latent profile analysis revealed two distinct classes based on symptom severity of MI and CPTSD. Specifically, when we examined the six symptom clusters for CPTSD dimensionally, four in five veterans endorsed high levels of distress related to all indicators of MI and CPTSD symptoms compared to a group with lower scores.

Overall, the two sets of findings suggest the special relevance of MI among veterans who are struggling with CPTSD. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2021 APA, all rights reserved).

The current study examined the psychometric properties of a Chinese translation of the Multidimensional Assessment of Parenting Scale (MAPS) in order to (a) assess both positive and negative dimensions of parenting in Chinese-speaking societies and (b) to explore the association between these practices and children's psychopathological symptoms. A total of 2,237 parents with children between 6 and 12 years old completed the MAPS, Interpersonal Mindfulness in Parenting Scale (IM-P), adapted Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI), and other measures related to children's psychosocial functioning. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) revealed a clear six-factor structure. Strong to strict measurement invariance for child gender, parent gender, and child age were found. The results demonstrated adequate psychometric properties in terms of internal consistency and test-retest reliability. MAPS subscales also showed concurrent and convergent validity with mindful parenting, parent-child bonding, and children's psychopathology outcomes. The Chinese version of the MAPS will help facilitate multidimensional parenting research in Chinese-speaking societies and promote future cross-cultural studies examining the effect of positive and negative parenting on children's psychopathological adjustment. Linsitinib ic50 However, individuals do not want to change for the better on all (even socially desirable) traits alike. In a meta-analytic summary of evidence on the Big Five, we demonstrate that individuals' trait levels are only negatively related to their change goals for Neuroticism, Extraversion, and Conscientiousness, but not for Agreeableness and Openness to Experience. In three studies, two of them preregistered, we replicated these meta-analytic findings using the HEXACO model, showing negative relations between trait levels and change goals for all dimensions, except Honesty-Humility and Openness to Experience. Strikingly, however, these trait-specific differences in correlations of trait levels and change goals disappeared once providing individuals with personality feedback before assessing their change goals, suggesting that individuals may generally want to change for the better once having sufficient self-knowledge.
