The incidence of xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) in Yemen seems to be quite high but there are no previous reports.
To study the clinicoepidemiologic aspect of XP in Yemen.
All 40 patients (24 male and 16 female patients from 32 families) treated and followed between 1997 and 2014 were subjected to detailed analysis with the help of a standardized protocol. The diagnosis was based on clinical features and histopathologic data, when needed. The diagnosis of tumors was confirmed by histopathologic examination in all cases.
The median age of onset of initial manifestations was 9.5months, and that of malignant lesions was 7years. Parents of the patients were not affected, but history of consanguinity was recorded in 38. Initial lesions, such as dryness of the skin and freckles on the face, were noticed in all patients. In addition, erythema of the face with photosensitivity was observed in 21 patients. Premalignant and malignant skin lesions observed later were actinic keratosis in 15 patients, lentigo maligna in one, squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in 10, and basosquamous carcinoma in one. Eyes were affected with SCC in seven and malignant melanoma (MM) in two patients. SCC of the lip developed in two patients and that of the tongue in one patient. Judicious use of acitretin in 12 patients showed good result.
XP in Yemen is characterized by a relatively high incidence, high percentage of consanguinity in parents of the patients, early onset of initial manifestations, malignant tumors, and severe ocular and oral lesions. Acitretin showed good result.

The study thereby reveals the key role of ecology as a mediator of personality-related pace-of-life-syndromes in the wild.Previous studies have reported lowered implicit self-esteem at the behavioral level among depressed individuals. However, brain responses related to the lowered implicit self-esteem have not been investigated in people with depression. Here, event-related potentials were measured in 28 dysphoric participants (individuals with elevated amounts of depressive symptoms) and 30 control participants during performance of an implicit association task (IAT) suggested to reflect implicit self-esteem. Despite equivalent behavioral performance, differences in brain responses were observed between the dysphoric and the control groups in late positive component (LPC) within 400-1,000 ms poststimulus latency. For the dysphoric group, self-negativity mapping stimuli (me with negative word pairing and not-me with positive word pairing) induced significantly larger LPC amplitude as compared to self-positivity mapping stimuli (me with positive pairing and not-me with negative pairing), whereas the control group showed the opposite pattern. These results suggest a more efficient categorization toward implicit self-is-negative association, possibly reflecting lower implicit self-esteem among the dysphoric participants, in comparison to the controls. These results demonstrate the need for further investigation into the functional significance of LPC modulation during IAT and determination of whether LPC can be used as a neural marker of depressive-related implicit self-esteem.
Phototherapy for acne with a combination of blue and red light-emitting diodes (LEDs) appears to have excellent potential in treating inflammatory acne. However, a standard twice-weekly protocol administered 3 days apart may not be practical for patients. This study aims to seek the efficacy of LED treatment in moderate to severe acne, comparing between once and alternating twice-weekly regimens.
Thirty subjects with moderate to severe acne, as defined by Burton's grading score, were recruited in the study. The subjects were randomly divided into two groups- one group received alternating blue (470 nm) and red (640 nm) light in two visits per week for 4 consecutive weeks, while the other group got blue and red light treatments consecutively on the same visit for 4 consecutive weeks. During the study period, conventional treatments were prohibited. Clinical assessments were performed by lesion counts and blinded comparative photographs before treatment and at 1, 4, and 8 weeks after the final treatment.
There was no statistically significant difference between once- and alternating twice-weekly regimens. Both regimens provided marked improvement only for inflammatory lesions. The median percentage of acne reduction was significantly demonstrated for 1 week after finishing the course of treatment and was sustained until the end of the study. There were no side effects noted throughout the study period.
LED therapy is safe and effective for treatment of inflammatory acne. The treatment outcomes of once and alternating twice-weekly regimens were comparable, hence, once-weekly treatment could be considered as an alternative choice for patient's convenience. Lasers Surg.
