Power and Conflict in Remains and Poppies:
Theme: R+P=Death
R-'I see every round of it as it rips through his life.' Sensory Imagery - helping to create the image helping the reader to understand it better, OWA 'rips' - harsh sound, violence, hideous dying=PTSD (context). Reader left imagining the death of the victim and understands how horrible it would have been to view it.
P-'Poppies had already been placed on individual war graves.' Juxtaposition - 'individual' single, 'graves' plural, showing the death and loss of soldiers. Reader understands that there are lots of dead soldiers and feels awful for the families of all of these dead soldiers who are now buried. Poppies-flowers grown on battlefield, symbolism red=blood
Language:
R-'His blood shadow stays on the street.' Metaphor - creating image. Showing PTSD, follows you, no escape from memory. Reader is left imaging how bad the soldier must feel because of what he has done.
P- 'The world overflowing like a treasure chest.' Sibilance, OWA 'overflowing' showing that there is too much and no more room, OWA 'treasure chest' something with luxuries and goods potentially a good thing. Reader can understand that the mother feels that there is a lot happening which could also be possibly excitement. But they also know that at this point life was good before war but after war there could be a lot of bad things happen like death. This makes the reader feel happy because at this time there were lots of good things but that could end soon.
Structure:
R-'Probably armed, possibly not.' Repetition of modal verb emphasis of the soldier's uncertainty, feeling guilty as he had a lack of information. Reader feels that the soldier feels powerless in memory.
P-'Three days before
