How the Conquered Were Treated
Usually, when the Romans conquered a territory they would just force it into an alliance with Rome but aside from a few Roman officials, they would mostly just leave them be. They would take gods from the conquered people and import them into the Roman culture, and in turn bing their gods into the conquered nation's culture. This was a further form of assimilation. It was good to be in an alliance with Rome because it meant their borders were secure and could trade more easily. Also, they didn't get taxed. The only real form of payment the Romans demanded was the donation of a few soldiers when there was a war.
