The place treats Franz and other patients so horribly. They are young, and the doctors don't care about him.

In the book All Quiet on the Western Front, the author stress that young people have it worse during wars. He proves this in a few ways. In the seconds chapter, he compares young to older people. He shows that they are different. The author suggests young people are more exposed than older people.
First, he shows that older people have more things to fight for. In the book, it states, "All the older men are linked up with their previous life. They have wives, children, occupations, and interests, they have a background which is so strong that the war cannot obliterate it" This shows that the older people are more fazed and therefore more motivated. Logically, they would do or fight better in the war.
Furthermore, older men are usually more experienced. They usually have studied more, and have heard more stories. They might know what to expect. For young men, it would probably be harsher than expected. They would instantly make friends that would hurt them if they died.
