marinette dupain-cheng is the daughter of two famous ex ice-skaters and has been skating since she was four. Now, at the age of 25, she is a world-class champion and the most famous ice skater in the world.

adrien agreste has been skating since he was ten. he waited until to make his senior debut until he was 23, and ended up winning bronze in the Grand Prix of skating. he is also famous because his father is a fashion designer who doesn't really support his skating (also because he's hot as fuck and he's a great skater)

at the banquet after the grand prix, adrien got hella drunk and danced with marinette, and drunkenly joked that if she coached him, he'd probably beat her and win gold. he doesn't remember anything, but she fell in love at first sight. it turns out that they both live in paris, and she comes out to meet him randomly about a year after the banquet and agrees to coach him.

adrien is at first more in love with marinette's skating and her skating persona (she's called the ladybug of the ice because of her penchant for wearing red and black) than with her as a person and coach, but he gradually falls in love with the real marinette too.

meanwhile, marinette loves how sweet and sort of bashful and gentlemanly adrien is and thinks his skating persona is annoying and oversexualized (he is known as chat noir, the black cat of the ice, because he always wears a black costume with cat ears, and marinette suggested the sexualizing thing because it would make him popular but she secretly hated it) but she eventually comes to realize that chat noir is just another side of adrien that he can only express on the ice.
