1953 yılında Makedonya'da doğdu. Ailesiyle Türkiye'ye döndükten sonra ortaokulu İzmir Karşıyaka'da bitirdi. 1972-1975 yılları arasında Karşıyaka Kültür Dayanışma Dernek Başkanlığı ve DİSK Tekstil Sendikasında işyeri baş temsilciliği gibi görevlerde bulundu. 29 Mart 1977 tarihinde ise Genel-İş Sendikası'na üye oldu. 1980'de gerçekleşen 12 Eylül Darbesi sonrasında bu sendikanın kapanması üzerine ESHOT Troleybüs Atölyesi kurumunda yedi yıl gibi bir süre Belediye-İş Sendikasının baş temsilciliğini yürüttü. 2001'e kadar benzer birçok yerde görev aldıktan sonra DİSK'in Ege Bölge Temsilciliğine geçti. 2004 sonrasında Genel-İş Genel Sekreterliği yaptı. 2010'lu yıllarda DİSK Ankara Temsilcisiydi.[1] 7 Nisan 2013 tarihinde yapılan DİSK başkanlığı seçimini ikinci turda 206 oyla[2] kazandı ve sendikanın lideri oldu.[3] Başkanlığı döneminde genel olarak 1 Mayıs İşçi Bayramı, Soma Faciası, taşeron işçiler ve kıdem tazminatları konularının tartışıldığı ve görüşüldüğü dönemlerde basında yer buldu.[4] Ayrıca 2017 Türkiye anayasa değişikliği referandumu 'Hayır' kampanyasına destek veren isimlerden biri oldu.[5]
