-water source (water well, municipal water, recycled water)
-base (calcium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide; raise pH)
-hard water (other sources of minerals)
-denitrification (produces alkalinity, stabilize pH/harder to change)

affect:
-ratio of NH3 to NH4+ (pH < 7.0, >95% NH4+; as pH increase, NH3 ratio will increase)
-nitrification rates (pH levels get too low, process will slow down or stop at pH 4.5, ammonia level accumulate to toxic)

[NH3 <-> NH4+] ammonia
affected by:
-temperature (affect NH3 to NH4+ ratio, warmer water increase NH3 ratio)
-pH (affect NH3 to NH4+ ratio, pH < 7.0, >95% NH4+; as pH increase, NH3 ratio will increase)
-organic matter decays (fishes urine) (increase NH3 / NH4+)

-fish health (NH3 extremely toxic; NH4+ unless its extremely high levels)
