The Scottish Highlands has magnificent scenery, with mountains, rivers and lakes (called 'lochs'). Ben Nevis (1343 m) is the highest mountain in Britain. Numerous islands lie off the rocky coast. Inverness is an important tourist centre, especially for trips to nearby Loch Ness, where visitors hope to catch sight of the 'monster'. The Scottish Lowlands, a region of rolling hills and sheep farms, has Scotland's biggest city, the great port of Glasgow, and its capital Edinburgh. With its magnificent castle, Edinburgh has become a major tourist attraction. The English North Country has the rugged Pennine Mountains and areas of wild moors, popular with walkers and climbers. The Lake District is famous for its natural beauty and association with the Romantic poets. Northumberland and Yorkshire have historical cities with beautiful cathedrals, including York and Durham. Big lively cities like Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds were the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. Wales has a very distinctive character with its own culture, traditions, language and legends. The main attraction is the beautiful scenery along the coast and in the mountains and valleys of the interior, especially in Snowdonia National Park. Rich in history, Wales has over 400 castles to visit and many museums, particularly in the capital Cardiff. The English Midlands offers a countryside of old-fashioned villages and thatched cottages. There are numerous historical towns and buildings to attract visitors, including the university city of Oxford, the medieval castle of Warwick and Stratford-upon- Avon, Shakespeare's birthplace. There are busy industrial cities too, especially Britain's second city Birmingham. Torquay The West Country is the most popular holiday area in Britain as a result of its milder climate and attractive coastal scenery. The main city is the historic port of Bristol but there are several large resorts on the south coast, including Torquay where even trees grow. other attractions include the city of Bath, with its Roman remains Salisbury Cathedral, the pre-historic monument at Stonehenge and the enchanting villages in the Cotswold Hills. Apart from the world-famous attractions of the capital London, offers the picturesque region of Anglia, with the south-East historic market towns like Norwich and the university city of Cambridge. South of London lie the rolling hills of the Downs with villages, country gardens and stately homes. The cathedral beautiful ties of Canterbury and Winchester are popular with visitors. The coast has important seaside resorts like Brighton and numerous ports, such as Southampton and Dover, with its famous white cliffs.
