continental drift theory
Due to symmetry of the coastlines on the either side of the ocean,
many scientists thought of the similarity and considered the possibility of the two americas
Europe and Africa. To be once joined together.

Abraham Ortelius - 1596
1. Abraham Ortelius was the dutch map maker who first proposed in 1596 that million years ago
all seven continents were joined together because he found the similarities at the coastal lines on it.

Antonio Pellegrini - 1858
1. Antonio pellegrini drew a map of showing the three continents together. he said that Africa, North America
and South America can be fitted like a jigsaw puzzle if their boundaries being connected together.

Alfred Wegner - 1912
1. Alfred wegner was a German meteorologist who had given the continental drift theory in 1912

what is continental drift theory?

1. according to Wegner, all the continents formed a single continental mass
and mega ocean surrounded the same.
2. the super continent was named PANGAEA which means all earth.
3. the mega ocean was called PANTHALASSA means all water.
4. Alfred Wegner argued that around 200 million years ago, the super continent PANGAEA began to split.
5. Pangaea first broke into two masses as LAURASIA and GONDWANALAND they were situated into
two parts in northern and southern respectively.
6. Laurasia and Gondwanaland continued to break into various smaller continents that exists today.

Evidences in support of the continental drift theory.

i)- the shorelines of Africa and South America facing each other have a remarkable and unmistakable
match
ii)- Bullard made a computer program map in 1964 to show an animated continental drift.
