The Great Wall of China was built by three groups of people: soldiers, citizens, and criminals. Most of the working force was comprised of soldiers, but criminals had to help as a punishment. They served for four years.
It is a large wall designed to defend China. Because it was such a large project, it took millions to build. Back then, there weren't bricks available, so most of the wall was built of earth, stones, and wood.
The Great Wall of China was built over a span of approximately two millennia. After China was united from the seven Warring Kingdoms, the emperor linked three walls in the north of China. Over the next two millennia, modifications and changes were made to the Wall. The first walls were made in the Qin Dynasty, but the modern walls we see now were mostly built in the Ming Dynasty.
