Shadowstep eyed her kits, her eyes narrowed and disapproving. "Not very impressive," she told Gorseleaf. "B-but they're your kits! They were just born! How can you h-hate them already?" the medicine cat said. "Look at them. Small. Pathetic," she hissed in reply. "I'm s-sure they'll get better and live up to your e-expectations," Gorseleaf said, stepping forward to look at the kits. "They better," Shadowstep snarled in reply, as the bigger kit looked up at her, his toxic green eyes shimmering.

The large kit looked at his sister, his head tilted. His black tabby pelt shimmered in the sun filtering through the nursery leaves. "Why won't she get up?" he asked his mother, his eyes turning to her unimpressed face. "She's just weak, sweetie. Don't worry, you're much better than her," she purred, to what seemed was going to be her only surviving kit. Gorseleaf stepped in, her nervous face staring at the small kit, a ragged patch of blue and silver fur. "Um, I think she's sick," she told Shadowstep. "What a surprise," the queen answered sarcastically.
