Good afternoon delegates and most esteemed chair, today I will be addressing the topic of Emerging Environmental Impacts in Iran. Iran has many current problems with its environment. One such problem is deforestation, around 118 million hectares, or 1.18 million km2, is rapidly turning into desert. We only have 1.65 million km2 of land anyway, so this is a huge problem for us, as this is around 72% of our land! If this problem is not quickly resolved and perseveres, we predict that Iran is going to become an almost fully barren land with no citizens within 30 years. What we're doing to stop this is to protect many places such as natural parks and reserves. We believe that the more places we protect from deforestation, the slower our land is going to turn into a desert.
We also have problems with our water supplies as we get frequent droughts and 2/3 of rainfall evaporates before it can be used, as well as water contamination due to sand storms. Our freshwater supplies are also under huge stress as we are drawing a lot of water from subterranean sources and our about to run out of those as well. This lack of freshwater is generally making it harder for us to farm and work in agriculture due to poor irrigation.
We also have a huge problem with pollution, as most of our air is largely polluted to the point where it has surpassed the WHO *maximum* guidelines.
To battle these problems all at once, since they are severely affecting us, we are trying to slow down our urge for development so that we can afford the public's needs such as food, water, clean air, jobs, and land. By taking out a part of our budget to develop and using it to make our people live, we allow both important processes to happen at once, even if they are slower than usual. We can't develop Iran WITHOUT Iran, so we're saving our country before looking into the future.
