2016 - what an amazing year!

Accurately speaking, 2016 for me started in December, 2015. On a winter day when I came to a final job interview with, well, about 10 or something team members of Maps.Me. We started in the morning and finished in the evening with a job offer right after a last interview.

Needless to say it was unusual but feels OK. I spoke with developers from different groups, then, with a CEO of the project and I liked it. People there were just amazing, project - great and plans, well, enormous is a good word to describe it. I felt like I’m at the right place.

At the right and a bit scary place. Let’s place some context here: Maps.Me was acquired by Mail.Ru Group about a year ago at that time and a part of the team with most of the management began to pack. So, I was a replacement manager for a product team of 15+ slightly disorientated people facing the unknown, keeping in mind I would lose some key members in the nearest future. Yeah, great )

Nevertheless, here we are:

1. Personnel crisis - solved. There was a time we have basically no Android developers and one person for routing tasks. An now - we’re fully packed and growing. People feel no fear for the future of the project or themselves, we really trust each other and, hell, we are as motivated to push forward together as it can possible be.
2. QA process and automatic crash reports - enabled. Not that long ago one of our users wrote us - «Guys, I love Maps.Me, but I install every new version in a virtual environment first». And now, though, not everything is as stable as it can be, our top feedback requests finally moved to a feature requesting )
3. Rapid product development process - formed. I’m proud, how our team has cracked a great number of huge features: from a POI editor to a live traffic data integration with a major release every month and a half and at least one minor release in between with a map data update. We are moving in so many various directions here, that we even have our own production Apache Spark cluster now. Not bad for a compact development team! Yeah, we still have some problems (like inaccurate planning with an up to 30% planning error), but we’re evolving and evolving fast!

In conclusion, here is a lovely link http://maps.me/en/2016-results

Happy New Year!
