The lateral area (L.A.) of a pyramid is the sum of the areas of the lateral faces. In order to find the lateral area, we would simply find the area of each triangular lateral side and add them together.
The total area (T.A.) of a pyramid is the sum of the lateral area and the area of the base.
If a pyramid is nonregular, we must have enough measures given to find the area of each face. However, if a pyramid is regular, the area can be computed even if only enough measures are given to find the area of one face and the base.
Area of one lateral face = sl
Notice that this formula is the same as the area of a triangle except we use the length of side of the pyramid base (s) and the slant height (l).
Area of n lateral faces = n( sl). This simply means that if we find the area of one lateral face, we multiply that by the number of lateral faces since they are congruent in a regular pyramid.
