Bahasa inggris diperkenalkan oleh kolonisasi inggris kepada amerika di awal abad ke 17 dan tersebar ke seluruh penjuru dunia karena kekuatan dari kerajaan inggris pada jaman itu. selama bertahun-tahun. Inggris yang digunakan di Amerika Serikat dan di Inggris mulai menyimpang dari satu sama lain dalam berbagai aspek.
penyimpangan tersebut mulai membuat perbedaan-perbedaan yang kita tahu sekarang ini, dan setelah amerika bebas dari kolonial inggris di tahun 1776, perbedaan itu semakin terlihat dan aksen pun mulai berubah. dulu seperti british, american adalah pengguna aksen Rhotic i.e, dimana huruf R tidak terlalu terbaca. contohnya 'I Don't Care.' dalam british kalian bisa dengar kami bicara seperti 'I Don't 'Kaeh', namun dalam american kalian akan mendengar 'I Don't 'Kaer'. dan sampai sekarang.. walaupun london, sekarang juga sudah mulai menjadi non-rhotic, tapi masih ada beberapa daerah yang masih menggunakan rhotic juga.
