Popular Sovereignty: people can alter/abolish the government

Federalism: division of power between the federal gov. and the states

House of Representatives: Part of Congress- 435 members, speaker regulates debate
Senate: Part of Congress- 2 members per state, vice president is president
Electoral College: method of electing the president
Supreme Court: highest court in US
Bill: laws as proposals
Appeal: ask decision to be brought to a higher court
Unconstitutional: not allowed under Constitution
Veto: reject
Override: overrule
Impeach: bring charges against for serious wrongdoings

First Amendment: freedom of speech, religion, press, and right to assemble
Second Amendment: right to bear arms and militia
Civil War Amendments: 13th- slavery was abolished 14th- former slaves could become a citizen 15th- anyone can vote
Nineteenth Amendment: women can vote
Twenty-Sixth Amendment: lowered voting age from 21 to 18
Incriminate: give evidence against
Civil: noncriminal

We the people, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare and secure the blessings of liberty for ourselves and our posterity, to ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
