Hurricane Katrina: 23/08/2005 -

Hurricane Katrina started on the 23/08/2005 and was classed as a depression storm and it was spotted at 5pm on the coast of the Bahamas, scientists said that it was heading to Florida but they were not expecting what the final outcome would be. Then on the 24/08/2005 it was upgraded to a tropical storm, this was noted at 11pm and was heading for Florida as was predicted. Scientists thought that after hurricane Katrina had hit Florida it would spiral round and head for the North. When the hurricane hit Florida on the 25/08/2005 it was finally classed as a category 1 hurricane (the lowest class of hurricane). On the 26/08/2005 it changed course and instead of spiralling around like 90% of hurricanes do it carried on heading straight for New Orleans. On this day it was again classed as a category 2 hurricane.
Throughout the next 3 days it continued to become stronger and more deadly. It goes as high as a category 5 hurricane level (this is the highest classed hurricane with winds as low as 130mph and a high of 156mph!). Then on the 29/08/2005 at 6am Katrina makes landfall in Louisiana of New Orleans as a category 3 hurricane, it tore through many houses and ripped up trees, post boxes and much more debris. New Orleans only got a few days warning before the day that the hurricane became landfall. The amount of water than crashed through 80% of the city went up to the standard 2 floor houses door. One man told newsmen and women that he ran to his attic to try and take shelter but in the end he had to jump out of his attic window because he saw thye water starting to seep through his door that had been barricaded with old furniture.
