We upbraid ourselves for being losers, time wasters. But, as Winnocott knew,mental well being depends on having to hand a repertoire of more gentle, forgiving and hopeful inner voices. To keep going, there are moments when one side of the mind needs to say to the other, that the criticism is enough: that it understands, that this could happen to anyone, that one could not have known... It is this kind of necessary benevolent voice that the child first starts to rehearse and excise with the help of a stuffed animal. In adolescence, animals tend to get put away. They become embarrassing, evoking an unsafe we're keen to escape from. As we mentioned before Donald Winnicott thought of the idea of make the stuffed toys into a business but he only thought of it never did anything about it but the German Steiff company made the first commercial about creating stuffed toys which was in 1880. The Steiff used new techlonogy developed upholstery to make their stuffed toys. In 1892, the Ithaca Kitty became one of the first mass-produces stuffed animals toys in United states. The stuffed toys were made by sewing it from a textile, and stuffed with a soft material. ... Textiles commonly used include plain cloth and pile textiles like plush or terrycloth. Common stuffing materials are synthetic fiber batting, cotton, straw, wood wool, plastic pellets or beans. The stuffed toys were made and are still being made for children from all around the world to all sizes and shapes.

You all know the classic Teddy bears. But have you wondered why they are called “Teddy” and not stuffed bears?

The name comes after the US president Theodore Roosevelt. During a hunt he came across a defenseless black bear. He refused to kill the animal. The story was heard by a toy maker who decided to make a stuffed bear and call it Teddy Bear after Roosevelt. An extra fun fact is that Roosevelt actually didn’t like calling the stuffed toy "Teddy" at all.
