movies are an escape. it's art. as meryl streep recently pointed out, "An actor’s only job is to enter the lives of people who are different from us, and let you feel what that feels like. And there were many, many, many powerful performances this year that did exactly that. Breathtaking, compassionate work."
often, i lean toward fantasy or science-fiction films, because they so easily depart from reality. even animated films, despite being geared to children or heavily marketed toward familial themes specifically, provide the perfect escape from the dreary day to day habits of getting up, going to work, coming home, turning on the news and seeing someone being inaugurated that may not be who you voted for.
so, as a reminder to myself and to everyone else, here are 5 movies that can be watched repeatedly and have some very important themes at their forefront: be good. be kind. keep moving forward. don't let bitterness weigh you down.
