Samael adalah salah seorang dari 7 archangel dalam mitologi yang tersebar di daerah Palestina kuno. Samael diceritakan sebagai malaikat yang baik sekaligus jahat. Nama Samael berarti “Poison of God”. Terkadang Samael juga mendapat sebutan sebagai Angel of Death.
Samael merupakan penguasa dari surga tingkat ke 5 dan mengepalai 2 juta malaikat lainnya. Samael tinggal di surga tingkat ke 7. Samael disebutkan sebagai figur yang berkelahi dengan Yakub, selain itu juga sebagai figur yang menahan tangan Abraham waktu akan mengorbankan anaknya.
Pada mitologi di daerah Palestina kuno, sebelum Eve (Hawa), Adam memiliki istri lain yaitu Lilith. Karena perseteruannya dengan Adam, Lilith dibuang dari Taman Eden. Kemudian Lilith menjadi menjadi istri Samael dan melahirkan para pasukan setan. Beberapa sumber menyebutkan bahwa Samael adalah nama asli Lucifer sebelum dia jatuh ke bumi. Ular yang muncul di Taman Eden juga merupakan penjelmaan Samael, karena itu selain digambarkan sebagai malaikat, dia juga seringkali digambarkan sebagai ular bersayap.
